Trump Would Press the Agenda That Drove His Voters from the GOP (Barf Alert)
National Review Online ^ | 4/20/2016 | Andrew C. McCarthy

I wonder when the Trump backers will realize they’ve been had. The 2016 GOP campaign has been overwhelmed by Donald Trump’s celebrity persona, by the can’t-take-your-eyes-off-it appearances where he might say or do anything — and “anything” includes expletives, incitements, and assorted idiocies that would have been disqualifying in the bygone times of, oh, five or ten minutes ago. But Trump is not the real story of the campaign. The real story is the Republican base’s rejection of the Republican establishment — i.e., the party leaders, prominent pols, lobbyists, and donors who make up the GOP component of the Washington ruling class. It is, we’re told, an “insurgent election.” In the media narrative, which swallows whole Trump’s self-portrait, the “outsider” real-estate mogul’s ongoing clash with Senator Ted Cruz is the ultimate showdown of “Insurgent v. Insurgent.” Alas, if you buy this storyline, you’re apt to miss a couple of things. The first is that no one else is left. As we focus on the pitched battle between the two remaining candidates, it is easy to overlook that all the insiders’ preferred candidates have been swept aside — unless you count the vanity crusade of John Kasich (which I don’t, except as a subsidiary of the Trump campaign). To stride in what the media once touted as “the establishment lane” was to walk the plank. Establishment candidates were cast aside by three-quarters of the party’s base, erstwhile supporters whom GOP leadership either misread or haughtily dismissed. It turns out those voters weren’t kidding: They really did want a stop put to the damage the Obama Left is doing to the country. They are ballistic at a party that promises to fight when campaigning but, once elected, preemptively surrenders under the guise of “showing we can govern” and “making Washington work.”

“I wonder when the Trump backers will realize they’ve been had”

Unlike the past few election where our educated betters selected our candidate?

I wonder when the GOPe will realize this election is not about TRUMP the man.

It is the message Trump is sending. A message no other candidate has been able to get in front of the voters.

People will not vote for Trump because of his past history (or even his current history), they will vote for Trump because he speaks to them.

Will he deliver? I don’t know, but I do know anyone that the GOPe wants will NOT deliver since they have not done so up to this point.

People who I have respected and looked up to cannot see what is so obvious to those of us who live a life one paycheck away from destitution. They insist upon denigrating the very people that pay their salaries that keep them many paychecks away from being unable to go to the highbrow cocktail parties where they can drink their single-malt scotch. I am definitely re-thinking who to pay attention to when I need information.

Buckley actually despised trump, so the Apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

The one thing I noticed is that Trump can’t take hits.

The whole MSM and Obama administration hammering him every day. Every little thing being lead stories on all media outlets. Something Trump does good or gross mistakes by Hillary will not be mentioned.

Yeah...as soon as I typed that I wanted to clarify it.

In the broad senses you mention yes he can take it and even mocks it and throws it back. But when it got personal [”small hands”, etc.]he was a bit staggered.

Hitlery Bill and her minions will do no less. I am hoping his camp is prepared.

“I am definitely re-thinking who to pay attention to when I need information.”

So am I, and I am chagrined that I have allowed myself to be taken in by all of them. Trump has done this country a Yuge favor, outing all this frauds who have systematically worked to keep us disenfranchised. And National Review should be renamed National Disgrace!

I wonder when the NRO realises they are irrelevant and we no longer look to them for opinion.

I woke up February of last year when I realised that my Republican party has sold me out.

I was blind but now I see. And to the NRO, you used to be a trusted source, but no longer.

The Vulgarians have risen up!

What drove folks from the republican party?

Long wars based on dubious evidence that cost their sons and daughters lives, with questionable goals and no exit strategies.

“Free Trade” that basically allowed every third world tin pot free access to our markets, destroying the middle class.

“Fiscal Conservatism” that burned cash only at a slightly slower rate than the socialists.

“Open Borders” & H1B Visa programs that ignored the laws of our nation in exchange for back pocket deals with big players and business, to depress wages and the labor markets.

Capitulation at every level to a long term globalist agenda.

Just to name a few off the top of my head.

NRO has been part and parcel of the NEOCON destruction of this great nation.

“I wonder when the Trump backers will realize they’ve been had.”

I wonder when the writers at NRO will realize they’re complete idiots that no one listens to anymore.

The author, Andrew C. McCarthy, is a former prosecutor, and one of the few Conservatives still writing at NRO.

His criticism of Donald Trump, especially on immigration, is completely valid.

When I still cared about this election, I made exactly the same prediction that McCarthy makes - Trump will never build more than a few miles of the “Wall.” And Trump will give some form of “legal status” to all illegal immigrants who have not been convicted of other crimes.

However, McCarthy’s support of Ted Cruz is pure hypocrisy.

From 2000 to 2015, Ted Cruz was a rock solid George W. Bush Republican on the issue of immigration. Cruz did not become a “tough guy” on immigration until Trump started stealing away Cruz’s voters.

I will vote for the Republican nominee.

But Conservatives must accept the reality that our political influence has come to an end.

Massive immigration - both legal and illegal - is going to continue.

And we don’t have the votes - or the candidates - to stop it.

The most troubling aspect of Trump is how he stood with Boehner and Senate RINOs to attack the TEA party. Gave millions to stop the very grassroots he now claims to support.

Heck he’s given way more to corrupt Democrats than to Republicans.

And yes he calls in favors, golfs with RINOS and goes to parties with Democrats.

So, yes, Trump is the Washington establishment.

Meet the new boss; same as the old boss.

We have been fooled again.

“So, yes, Trump is the Washington establishment.”

Then why isn’t the NRO supporting him?

I think mainly because there was a revolt after Romney was forced down on the rank-and-file. When they revolted and went back to Buckley-style conservatism.

You would think if they remained on the liberal plantation, they would love Trump.

I guess that’s the bright side. At least they’ve regained some of their tarnished credibility by refusing to bow to this new liberal.

Hillary will attempt to belittle Trump as Trump did Cruz. There is a very good chance she will succeed.

Trump[ is gonna club that felonious witch like she's a baby Harp seal.

“You would think if they remained on the liberal plantation, they would love Trump.”

But they’re not. They hate the guy. They hate what he proposes, a wall paid for by Mexico, stopping muslim immigration, and making NATO pay for its defense.

“I guess that’s the bright side. At least they’ve regained some of their tarnished credibility by refusing to bow to this new liberal.”

I don’t know ANY liberals voting Trump, and I live in MA.

So much for your crazy-NRO induced theory.
