Trump Would Press the Agenda That Drove His Voters from the GOP (Barf Alert)
National Review Online ^ | 4/20/2016 | Andrew C. McCarthy

I wonder when the Trump backers will realize they’ve been had. The 2016 GOP campaign has been overwhelmed by Donald Trump’s celebrity persona, by the can’t-take-your-eyes-off-it appearances where he might say or do anything — and “anything” includes expletives, incitements, and assorted idiocies that would have been disqualifying in the bygone times of, oh, five or ten minutes ago. But Trump is not the real story of the campaign. The real story is the Republican base’s rejection of the Republican establishment — i.e., the party leaders, prominent pols, lobbyists, and donors who make up the GOP component of the Washington ruling class. It is, we’re told, an “insurgent election.” In the media narrative, which swallows whole Trump’s self-portrait, the “outsider” real-estate mogul’s ongoing clash with Senator Ted Cruz is the ultimate showdown of “Insurgent v. Insurgent.” Alas, if you buy this storyline, you’re apt to miss a couple of things. The first is that no one else is left. As we focus on the pitched battle between the two remaining candidates, it is easy to overlook that all the insiders’ preferred candidates have been swept aside — unless you count the vanity crusade of John Kasich (which I don’t, except as a subsidiary of the Trump campaign). To stride in what the media once touted as “the establishment lane” was to walk the plank. Establishment candidates were cast aside by three-quarters of the party’s base, erstwhile supporters whom GOP leadership either misread or haughtily dismissed. It turns out those voters weren’t kidding: They really did want a stop put to the damage the Obama Left is doing to the country. They are ballistic at a party that promises to fight when campaigning but, once elected, preemptively surrenders under the guise of “showing we can govern” and “making Washington work.”

Your daily morning NRO propaganda.

The tidbit that is interesting is the story behind Trump's contribution to Boehner's PAC formed to fend off conservative primary challenges against GOP establishment loyalists.

What agenda are they talking about. If it’s in the excerpt then I missed it. (Wouldn’t be the first time)

Just like Levin. A really, really smart guy, but unhinged by Trump. Overlooks every single defect of Cruz and harps on every purported bash of Trump. So be it.

Hillary will attempt to belittle Trump as Trump did Cruz. There is a very good chance she will succeed.

It does make a person wonder... Does Andrew C. McCarthy ever look around at the mess the country’s in and ask himself if (maybe, just maybe) he hand his fellow conservative elites have dropped the ball?

I just think he, like Levin, is a staunch conservative and believes the solution(s) to most of the issues facing the US is to elect staunch conservatives. And like Levin, I believe he is utterly sincere and there’s nothing he is really saying about Trump that is not true. But (also my opinion) the American electorate that is not dedicated to securing for themselves the same kind of spot at a lesser feeding trough and interested in restoring Constitutionality to the nation realizes that they cannot rely upon any candidates “sales brochure”. They elect the self-proclaimed conservative, they get to DC, and they are hijacked or bought off. They are tired of electing lying s**theads who conduct this Kabuki theater of pretending to be conservative. They see the elevation of overt criminality to the highest offices in the government and they are tired of paying for it.

There never, IMO, were enough conservatives to really derail 0bama’s Marxist anti-American agenda, I would not say they’ve “dropped the ball”. But they see a point of no return here, with the infinite immigration and infinite spending. Maybe they are very wrong supporting Trump, I can’t predict the future.

The one thing I noticed is that Trump can’t take hits. When Rubio and Cruz hammered him he became incoherent and angry. He can hand it to Hitlery but her campaign will try to make him angry.

He has got to guard against that.

If she is going to play her woman card and make this about lady parts, she will lose.

Trump can cobble together the old Reagan coalition of working class men and women who have been abused by the system so that the 47% can skate by paying nothing.

Reverse class envy as it were.

Good article. Trump has always been tight with Boehner, even when he (Trump) was a Dem.
