The Splintering of the Conservative Media
American Thinker ^ | March 18, 2016 | Steve McCann

Over the past 28 years there has been a sea change in the media. Not only has the monopoly of the so-called mainstream media been shattered but the phenomenal rise of conservative media has been truly stunning. It began in 1988 with the national syndication of Rush Limbaugh and his distinctive brand of conservative political commentary espoused in an entertaining and captivating way, which opened the flood gates for other conservatives, together with Rush, to dominate the talk radio airwaves. In the 1990’s the internet, through hundreds of websites, gave voice to journalists to report stories either ignored or downplayed by the mainstream media and for other conservatives to publish their comments and opinions. Over the years there has been a general good will among all these various players as the goal at the end of the day was to advance the conservative movement as the best political option for the people of this nation.

However, with the overwhelming emergence on the political scene of Donald Trump, someone who is not and has never been a conservative, this once near-monolithic movement is in danger of permanently splintering. While some conservatives are strongly opposed to Trump, many outlets have chosen to unabashedly support him regardless of what he says or does -- or has done or said in the past. Why they have become caught up in the populism sweeping a plurality of primary voters is a question they will have to answer, but on the surface it appears to be for expediency’s sake and not because of any loyalty to ideology.

How can this author think that there are absolutely NO conservative ideological issues possessed by Trump. Moreover, how well has our leadership (including the pundits) served the Conservative movement over the last, say, 15 years?

Shattering? Splintered?

I think it is a crack-up after a hard crash with reality. Some survived. Some didn't

MOST conservative commentators are far more concerned with obtaining an audience than they are in principles.

Which should not surprise anyone. Its why everyone needs to exercise their own powers of critical thought and make up their own damn minds.

Poor conservatism, it is becoming a “religion of one.”

They barely laid a hand on that woman journo the other day.

I had felt sure she really had been taken to the ground as she’d admonished, but it turned out to be HOGWASH:

She got her arm pinched a bit, and for less than ONE SECOND.

The claim was RIDICULOUS.

many [conservative media] outlets have chosen to unabashedly support him [Trump]

What? Start naming. I don't know of one, much less many. I have heard Michael Savage but don't get him on radio where I live. Beyond that...I can name dozens that unabashedly hate Trump with vitriol reserved only for Satan himself.

Conservative Media?

They say that like it was an actual thing.

AM radio, dusty magazines, a couple of low-rate cable networks, and some really poorly-designed websites is not a “media”.

The most disappointing ones are Weakly Standard and NRO.

Verrrrrry Country Club, and that is coming from a pretty regular Country Club person (but without any of the attitude).

I won’t be reading those publications ever again.

Sorry, I’m on the barricades with the dirty rebels.

Not really interested in fighting about who’s pro or anti Trump. In fact I’m about sick to death of this primary.

If we don’t conserve the country, what else is there?

The existential threat to the nation is the millions of foreigners pouring over our borders unchecked.

The “conservatives” who advocate abandoning of the rule of law and amnesty for the interlopers are not conserving the country, they are surrendering it.

someone who is not and has never been a conservative

There is no doubt in my mind that Trump is conservative. He's just not as conservative as the RINO-Right wants him to be. Cruz isn't even as conservative as the RINO-Right wants as they'll find out if he's ever elected President.

Trump by far has the upper hand over the GOP. Like every move Trump does it both attacks and defends. The GOP has to either accept him or accept Hillary.

Looking at it from a gambler's perspective:
Trump either becomes President and steers the party, or he destroys the the inept and compromised GOPe.

The GOPe either loses, or loses more.

That's perfect strategy. it's win big/lose vs win / lose big. You have to respect that. Go with the Winner.

Vote Trump, the new Teflon Don.
