With Apple set to unveil a new iPhone (and more) next week ahead of its court hearing with the FBI over the encryption battle, John Oliver has a smart take on the whole tangled issue.
The host of HBO's 'Last Week Tonight,' who has become increasingly relevant in debates on national issues, Oliver has come out in defense of Apple on the encryption issue, but noted the company could be more forthcoming with its ads, saying it could talk more about how hard it is to stay ahead of hackers.
Oliver noted the issue has been brought up on the campaign trail, even going so far as to reference Donald Trump's impromptu call to boycott Apple, which Oliver poked fun at. "'I just thought of it' -- give me another one. Israel, Palestine -- make 'em wrestle in those fake sumo-wrestler costumes. Done, done. Being president is easy," Oliver quipped.

Why doesn’t the FBI just ask China for help? They’ve probably already hacked Apple’s security.
John Oliver ...not funny. When I had HBO I never watched him. I gave it a try for two minutes...and this was enough.
i would have thought you in particular would find this one very funny.
Nope, not possible. The Chinese wanted to do a "Security Audit" on the iPhone before allowing it into China to be assured there was no NSA backdoor, Apple gave them enough information to demonstrate that was impossible. China had blocked importation while that audit was being done. They lifted it after four days.
John Oliver is obviously very Liberal, but he is very funny as well. . . and he comes down on the right side of this issue. Although he skewers Lindsey Graham in the beginning of the video, he also praises him at the end, when Graham publicly reverses his position.
Oliver’s wife is an Iraqi war vet; I’ve seen him at concerts for the troops.
For all others interested, there are two other companies the DOJ is targeting for end-to-end encryption.
WhatsApp (Silicon Valley company)
wire - Swiss company.
This is NOT about Apple.
It is about control of All Americans by Gov officials.
Why, we really don’t know yet.
One more thing I was thinking about.
DOJ doesn’t seem to be worried about VNC which uses AES256 and a node monitoring system that watches for infiltration.
It might be that NSA already has a hook for it.
Seems unlikely but why worry about phones and not about VNC.
Uuuuuh . . . importation? Iphones are made in China and China stated years ago that no cell phones would be sold there that the government did not have access to. Their definition of phone security is totally different from ours.
China changed their policy when it became obvious they couldn’t control encrypted apps that were becoming available everywhere. What they worried about more was whether foreign countries had backdoors to spy on their citizens, especially their government officials.
Spot on and funny as hell...
I have no doubt if Hillary Clinton had this terrorist iPhone...., then the FBI would not be interested.
