HUMAN beings have an appetite for moral outrage. You see this in public life in the condemnation of Donald J. Trump for vowing to bar Muslims from the United States, or of Hillary Clinton for her close involvement with Wall Street, to pick two ready examples and you see this in personal life, where we criticize friends, colleagues and neighbors who behave badly.
Why do we get so mad, even when the offense in question does not concern us directly? The answer seems obvious: We denounce wrongdoers because we value fairness and justice, because we want the world to be a better place. Our indignation appears selfless in nature.
And it often is at least on a conscious level. But in a paper published Thursday in the journal Nature, we present evidence that the roots of this outrage are, in part, self-serving. We suggest that expressing moral outrage can serve as a form of personal advertisement: People who invest time and effort in condemning those who behave badly are trusted more.

"Ready examples" of two things which only liberal bed-wetters find "outrageous".
And does anyone need wonder why celebrities are so depressingly left-wing?
TRANSLATION: “Shut up and vote for Hillary.”
I’d suggest that, as the book of Ecclesiastes argues and concludes, that there is a proper time for it, too, and that the proper time must observe the desires of a living God or else be resigned to being in vain.
The amusing thing is, the attempt itself to relativize outrage is in vain, because then we only find ourselves outraged that we have not relativized our outrage. C. S. Lewis would have had a field day puncturing our modern folly.
There is a crying need for genuine moral outrage.
Then there is “permanent” outrage, which is always on full, and should be ignored.
Pinging Ruru for any more observations here?
And even yet, when we only see the publicized face of a persona, how can we know what he or she is doing off mike and off camera?
Right on, Sir. It is only Liberal ‘bed-wetters” who demand to show their “compassion” and “humanity” by filling this country with the savages who are overrunning so much of Europe. The Europeans are cowering before the onslaut of rape, pillage, arson, and blood, set out as targets by their own governments.
Governments are NOT “required” to feed you, clothe and/or house you. What they are “required” to do is to assist in keeping you ALIVE.
What was it FDR listed as the 4 freedoms?
1. Freedom of speech
2. Freedom of religion
3. Freedom from want
4. Freedom from FEAR
It is the LIBERALS of the world chipping away at these 4 Freedoms, one at a time and little by little.
The only reason the author would write such a piece would be because he sees shades of grey only and has no moral compass so he can’t understand.
Trump has said he’d like to stop any new ones from coming here.
I only wish he could bar all muslims.
It’s the only way to be safe.
Never know when one will go off.
Before outrage the NYT might research moral principles.
Oh he understands - that's how he can stick so perfectly to grey areas, because he understands what the moral boundary lines are.
Liberals are utterly intoxicated, drunk even, with linguistic tricks. When they want to cut down trees, they form the Tree Preservation Society to do it.
Liberals are a combination of sophmoric and cruel. It's a bad combo.
“You see this in public life in the condemnation of Donald J. Trump for vowing to bar Muslims from the United States”.........
Might be appropriate if you would explain WHY Trump wants bar Muslims until we know more about them. If you choose to make a statement, make it an accurate one.
But accuracy undermines their intent of telling lies with the truth. If they tell to much, their lying generalizations fall apart. Lawyers are great at this, it comprises most of what they actually do. Versus what they appear to be doing, or saying. They can make a single partially truthful statement that an entire country can't decipher for generations. It's an actual talent.
In the NEW AMERICA....
1. Freedom of Speech
Please be aware that acceptable forms of speech may change at any time. Words and phrases may be promoted or disallowed at any time.
Please check with the MSM or the Ministry of Speech and Thought multiple times daily. Failure to do so may leave persons open to punishment from shaming to stoning for use of unauthorized language.
2. Freedom of Religion
You are free to practice any religion you find acceptable.
HOWEVER, the Christian and Jewish faiths may only be practiced if they conform to Government Approved Standards.
Compulsory acceptance of homosexual participation in all areas of religious practices is but one of GAS.
Please be aware that the Religion of Peace is exempt from all GAS as it is a superior religion.
3. Freedom from Want
All citizens are Free from Want as Daddy Government supplies each citizen with all they need as approved by the Ministry of Economic Equality.
4. Freedom from FEAR
All citizens are Free from FEAR because WE, the Elite of the nation at the Ministry of Equality of Outcome and the Ministry of Information will ensure that each citizen is properly cared for.
In other news.....
The last remaining military base in the US will closing at the end of the month.
Like the other closed military bases it will be converted into a Re-education Center in order to accommodate those less fortunate citizens who fail to adhere to the new Government Approved Standards.
“Moral outrage” is the tool of Leftist politcal bigots who incapable of winning an argument on policy and law with facts are reduced to screaming names at their opponents.
Use to work until Trump came along.
Hahahahahahahahaha!
Oh my.....let me catch my breath.......
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
I didn’t know the New York Times had turned into a comic book! Two funny stories in one day!
It took four people to write this?
Gee, right when Hillary Clinton is running for President.
How convenient.
How funny!
Peacock feathers are like moral outrage?
We shouldn’t be upset with liars and thieves?
Hahahahahahahahahahaha!
Maybe the New York Times could have some drawings with this article. You know, like a coyote plucking the tail feathers off a peacock. Or maybe Hillary Clinton quivering under her sheets in her bedroom as four Americans are murdered in Benghazi.
Please, New York Times, give us more humor like this!
It helps us forget the misery these years of Barack Obama have given us.
