A police officer shot a 16-year-old boy when he refused to drop the broomstick he was holding in Salt Lake City last night.
The officer was responding to an unrelated call in the Utah capital at 8.15pm when his team spotted two teenagers arguing with a man, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
Surrounding them, police allegedly told the boy to drop what he was holding - part of a broomstick. When he did not, 'shots were fired'. The boy was hit in the chest and the stomach.

Broomstick or spear? Enquiring minds want to know!
im all about law and order but a broomstick?...really?
Same incident, different spin: man, 16, found inflicting deadly force a la blunt trauma on homeless man; failing to stop when ordered by police, was shot until he ceased his lethal attack.
I’ve read elsewhere (Yahoo, I think) that the kid was beating someone with that broomstick when the cops arrived.
Is this the “boy” that was beating on a homeless guy with a broomstick?
I love cops but are we hiring a group of nutless pussies?
Was the FAA notified? Hillary overflight?
Don' call him "boy"...dat be rayciss!
Oh No, they’ve shot Harry Potter!
umm... unless he was holding the sweeper... that would be a wooden rod.
it is a weapon. depending on the length, it's either a bo staff
or a baton used in stick fighting
or simply a broken broomstick.
the difference ... is training.
How about sawed off shotgun with rock salt???? He would drop the stick and live in pain for a while.

Ask a veteran about bayonet drill sometime.
Yeah, this could go either way. If he’s refusing to stop a potentially deadly assault they should shoot him, and some sixteen year old kids are adult size.
It could be he was just holding the stick and they killed him with zero justification.
I know where I’d put my money on the scale of possible scenarios, but until the camera footage is released, the forensics reviewed and the witnesses sorted out by somebody besides the media we are all just guessing.
Learn the language, or die.
