Donald Trump claims he can't release his tax returns until he's done being audited by the IRS. But the federal agency on Friday said that's not true.
"Federal privacy rules prohibit the IRS from discussing individual tax matters. Nothing prevents individuals from sharing their own tax information," a spokesperson for the IRS said in a statement.
The Republican presidential front-runner's refusal to release his tax documents came up repeatedly during Thursday's GOP debate, hours after former Republican nominee Mitt Romney suggested that Trump's reluctance stems from the possibility there might be a "bombshell" in his taxes.
"I want to [release them], except for many years, I've been audited every year," Trump said during the debate. "Twelve years, or something like that. Every year they audit me, audit me, audit me. Nobody gets audited - I have friends that are very wealthy people. They never get audited. I get audited every year. I will absolutely give my return, but I'm being audited now for two or three years, so I can't do it until the audit is finished, obviously. And I think people would understand that."
While the IRS claims nothing is preventing the billionaire from releasing the information, Steven Golburd, an attorney specializing in tax law, told the Washington Post Friday it may indeed be in Trump's best interest to keep them private.
"Think of an audit as an investigation, an on-going investigation," Goldburd said. "Any person that has legal counsel, their legal counsel will say, 'If you're under investigation, you should not be talking to the media, you should not be talking to anyone other than your legal counsel or through your legal counsel.'"
Trump doubled down on his refusal to release his returns during a campaign rally Friday in Fort Worth, Texas. The billionaire told the crowd that Romney didn't release his tax returns until Sept. 21, 2012 - less than two months before voters cast their ballots in the 2012 presidential election.
Please get a grip. You are showing yourself to be a rabid follower, rather than a thoughtful conservative. He said his tax returns are being audited - who, besides the IRS, audits tax returns (I know states can, but that would be the state equivalent of an IRS audit).
He already released his financials.
You are exactly right. Those facts haven't inhibited many mainstream-media-maniacs and biased posters from deceitfully misconstruing what Trump did say.
The IRS should not be saying anything publicly about anyone's tax returns. That would had to have been triggered by an order from B-O, who has no business doing that either. Shame on all of them for their disgraceful nonsense..
ethics.......Trump has ethics.
Found on the internet:
Many have pointed out that it was George Romney who started this trend when he released 12 years of tax returns in November 1963.
Thanks, Mr. Romney.
“IRS is now getting involved publicly in Presidential elections?”
Seems ridiculous.
I wouldn’t release unfinalized returns either. Then he’d just have to re-release the fixes.
I’m sure Cruz and Rubio just want to start a class envy thing going. They have nothing else.
Hate to burst your bubble, but Cruz and Rubio have told a few whoppers themselves.
One of the signs of a cult is that adherents can rationalize everything the cult leader says. No matter how he may contradict things he’s said previously. No matter how irrational. It doesn’t mater. Members are so psychologically invested in the infallibility of the cult leader that they can justify it.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses, for example, call it “New Light.” By this, they can change doctrine 180 degrees and because the Faithful and Discreet Servant has seen “New Light,” that new statement is correct and it’s as if the previous statement was never made.
You may do well to ask yourself: Is there ANYTHING Trump could say or do that you would not rationalize away? Honestly ask yourself that question.
Hank
Ha...he can’t get an EPA authorization....all those trees to be cut down for paper, carbon black for the printer...and megawatts for the electricity to run the copiers.
Spot on. The IRS had an offcial spokeperson comment on a taxpayers sitation. This is clealry against policy. They are not even allowed to comment that an Audit is taking place. Trump should go after them. Why is the IRS allowing the Clinton Foundation to amend returns that were not even sudited? They were tipped off so they amended many items.
He also wore out 3 Parker pens and used a gallon of ink.
It must be true! Trump said it!
"Federal privacy rules prohibit the IRS from discussing individual tax matters. Nothing prevents individuals from sharing their own tax information," a spokesperson for the IRS said in a statement.
The Donald lies again. Dog bites man.
Trump to IRS: "Really? WTF is preventing you from sharing YOUR documents which were COURT-ORDERED?"
I don’t care who releases their returns. I won’t read them and I don’t want to read them.
Do you care who lies about their inability to release their returns? I do - just as I care who lies about pro-life justices.
