What if Trump Doesn’t Have Billions?
National Review ^ | 2/25/2016 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 02/25/2016 2:18:17 PM PST by Jewbacca

Why would Mitt Romney go on national television and declare, "I think we have good reason to believe that there's a bombshell in Donald Trump's taxes. Either he's not anywhere near as wealthy as he says he is, or he hasn't been paying the kind of taxes we would expect him to pay"? Since when does buttoned-down, white-bread Mitt Romney make audacious, provocative accusations? Romney's accusation might be a safe bet — if not to be verified, then to never be refuted. Just a few years ago, Trump refused to release un-redacted tax returns, even when it could help him win a $5 billion libel lawsuit against a New York Times reporter and author. If Trump was unwilling to release his returns in that circumstance, how likely is it that Trump will release them before Election Day? Just for your info, tax returns have 0 to do w/ someone's net worth. I have already filed my financial statements w/ FEC. They are great! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 25, 2016 Trump's wealth is a key part of his public image, his status in the eyes of his fans, and his self-image. On July 15, Trump issued a statement declaring, "As of this date, Mr. Trump's net worth is in excess of TEN BILLION DOLLARS." (Capital letters in original.)

What business is it of yours what Trump’s net worth is.

I do think it's a little rich that Romney would question someone's taxes, after what Harry Reid did to him.

But maybe he feels like he was hurt by an outright lie, while Harry Reid, nor anyone else, will ask the first question about Trump's taxes/finances.

From what I’ve heard, if he had just put his inheritance in an index fund and let it sit there, he would be wealthier than he is today

Where would he get the money to buy his jet?

Right, what it might show is charitable giving.

I’ll vote for whoever is nominated.

RNC/GOPe/Neocon Uniparty elite thugs like this thug,Jim Geraghty of NR, who have been the overseers of the Faux Conservative plantations since 1961. These overseers keep trying to trick/betray/control us to stay on/in their faux conservative plantations by selecting their ilk/puppets as our candidates. They lie and promise us conservatism and when elected $crew us daily in congress and as POTUS! NR and their handpicked tv/radio hosts have pushed their lies for decades.

In NH, SC and Nevada, Trump and his voters ignored them. His voters then voted big time for Trump. They won bigtime and broke the rules of the plantation masters by voting for Trump in NH. This is scaring the hell out of our former neocon RNC/GOPe masters of the faux conservative plantations and their ilk, the Club for Growth.

It is wonderful to see this decades old, long standing corrupt political system disintegrating right before our eyes. This corrupted system hates working Americans. It rewards illegals and those who bring them into America to freeload off the American workers slaving in the faux conservative plantation.

We are seeing a paradigm shift with us selecting our Presidential Candidate, instead of the RNC/GOPe/Uniparty elites, who hate us, selecting our candidates.

There is a Black Swan event occurring with the daily suicidal self wrought destruction of the RNC/GOPe, UniParty, Open Border Thugs, DC faux pundits, Faux News, ABCNNBCBS, NT and the left wing fish wraps. Something similar may be happening with the DEMes.

Many of us are looking forward to seeing the broken bones, drying blood and entrails of the Lying RNC/GOP Open Borders Elite, The Club for Growth, the UniParty, their DC faux conservative pundits, their mediots, their phoney pollsters and focus groups, Faux, ABCNNBCBS, NT, their hired tv and radio hacks strewn across the primary states as much as our victories in those states.

We have escaped from their faux conservative plantations. We are not going back for more lies, abuse and mistreatment from our former RNC/GOPe masters.

We will vote for Trump and destroy them!

The article is typical National Review neocon crap.

Romney is a horse’s ass for bloviating this supposedly hot item.

You comments are insightful as well. You post a worthless neocon article, then take a sophomoric, backbiting swipe yourself at Trump.

Class.

Every time one of you Cruzers post something about what Trump inherited it gets larger, that does often happen once an inheritance is received. Too funny.

If Trump has less than he once said which including assets which is something I doubt, that would make his spending his own money to fight for America even more impressive to me as it means he is willing to risk more. Other candidates are spending other people’s money!

Go Trump!

Good, vote for Bloomberg, fool. He’ll take your guns and your soda. But, hey, you won’t have to see low-brow Trump at the State of the Union Address.

I swear we have some idiots on this forum.

A tax return can not, nor can it establish personal net worth.

“From what I’ve heard, if he had just put his inheritance in an index fund and let it sit there, he would be wealthier than he is today.”

Correct. He’d have $13 billion, instead of the mid-hundreds of millions he has now. Source:

Donald Trump would be richer if he’d have invested in index funds

http://fortune.com/2015/08/20/donald-trump-index-funds/

And I concur with the posters that this would normally be irrelevant, but Trump claims he is qualified to be president because he is such a good deal maker and negotiator.

The fact is, he’s terrible at it, even using his numbers.

Hence, why all the smoke-and-mirrors regarding his net worth.

My unsupported hunch is that Romney misses politics and spends all his time talking about it with people who are very anti-Trump to the point where he just couldn't hold back any more and decided to go public.

I really doubt he knows anything, but you have to figure there's got to be something in a multi-millionaire's or billionaire's tax returns that will make somebody somewhere indignant.

Just why Romney is going after a former supporter with the same kind of accusations that Harry Reid used against Romney I don't know. Psychology might suggest that if you get hit with something that seems unfair or underhanded you're more likely, rather than less likely, to use such tactics against somebody else, because they make such an impression on you. A little thought might stop you, but I guess Mitt wasn't thinking.

“A tax return will not necessarily establish personal net worth.”?

Of course not. That’s in the first paragraph of the article.

But the K-1s, schedules, etc, are very helpful in figuring out net worth.

It’s a critical part of the data.

Why to zealot Cruz supporters lie so much? Trumps father died in 1999. Trump was a billionaire by the mid 1980s. He borrowed 1 million dollars from his father in 1970. It is that 1 million dollars that Trump turned into billions. But you already knew that didn’t you.
