Up until now, doctors have only been able to use blood tests to detect cancer as long as the patient has already undergone a painful biopsy and sequenced a tumor.

However, scientists have now developed a test which can detect cancer in ten minutes using just a drop of saliva.

To be priced at $21, the "liquid biopsy" can be taken at home and is hailed as completely revolutionizing the way the disease is diagnosed.

Professor David Wong of California State University says it is possible to detect tumor DNA when is it circulating in bodily fluids, noting, "We need less than one drop of saliva and we can turn the test around in 10 minutes. It can be done in a doctor's office while you wait." ...

How far advanced is a cancer before it is possible to detect tumor DNA when is it circulating in bodily fluids?

It said it had a nearly perfect accuracy. But, it’s used for relapse not for initial testing.

But, at least a simple CBC blood test can trigger enough red flags for most blood cancers.

I am not certain of the exact methodology of this technique, but my best educated assumption is that the cancer would have had to grow to the point where cancer cells are leaving the initial tumor and circulating around the body in preparation for starting new tumors. In other words, after the cancer has begun to metastasize.

HollyB :" It said it had a nearly perfect accuracy.

Yes , apparently it has limitations for usage; but at least it is a start in the right direction for inexpensive ' at home ' testing.
I imagine that an equally qualitative test for those who have not previously had cancer would have a high consumer demand ,.. but it is a beginning.

Yes, I love to see new innovation in this field! There seems to be a new directions in the cancer fields blooming. This is great. Seems they were at a stand still for a while. Thank you for your post!
