Has FreeRepublic Jumped The Shark With Trump?
2/14/16 | OV

Posted on 02/14/2016 9:47:13 PM PST by OneVike

I have been a member of FreeRepublic since February 1998, and in all my years I have ever seen so many Freepers support, and defend such a leftist candidate as Donald Trump. In the old days, any candidate that spouted the rhetoric coming out of his mouth would have been received with unanimous hatred from Freepers.

Mitt Romney was met with scorn when he claimed to have changed and was more conservative than his record showed. However, The Donald says the same thing and he is allowed to wear his liberal record as badge of honor, because he has been born again. Never mind that his fruit smells like Skubala. Any Republican candidate in the past who supported partial birth abortion was considered dead on arrival with 99.9% of Freepers. Yet a vast number of Freepers today look at Trump's defense of PP, and attack the candidate who dares to bring it up at a debate.

Thinking I have stumbled in some black hole of Bizzaro World, I decided to spend most the night, after the debate yesterday, researching past posts and comments of many Freepers who support Trump. I must admit that I wasn't too shocked to see that not all, but the vast majority, of his supporters have joined FR within the last 8 years. However I pretty much only searched the opinions of his most ardent supporters.

Interestingly enough, the ones I researched, all demanded that both Houses of Congress go after Planned Parenthood for selling baby parts. Many of them even demanded that the House use their power of the purse to defund PP. Yet these very same individuals defend, and make excuse for Trump's defense of said abortion factory, or at least claim it's bothersome but will still support him. These same individuals, however, were demanding McConnell resign for failing to pass legislation in the senate defunding PP. I did similar searches on their opinions of various other topics that Trump defends which would normally be cause of revulsion from these supporters had it been any other politician.

Well, I must admit that I am rather stunned by the way they have so easily changed their stances.

Who would have known that those who accused Jimmy Carter of never meeting a dictator and communist he didn't like, would now tout that his endorsement of Trump is not Trumps problem, and some even claim it will help him with Democrat voters in November. So we are now to welcome a politician that will get votes from leftists?

I thought the idea was to win them over to conservatism, not to abandon our beliefs just to get them to vote for our guy. So when will Freepers decide we need to change our stances on topics like "Black Lives Matter" to get more blacks to vote for our guy, or maybe we can find a good Muslim candidate who has made billions and talks a good game. Hey, so what if he may support Sharia law, just think of all those Muslim votes we can get from refugees Obama shipped in and we could actually own Dearborn Michigan. There has got to be some great female politicians who support PP that we could get behind, After all, we do have a problem with the female vote, right?

Yea, I'm just an old timer with old time values from the days when The Donald was still giving money to the Clintons and laughing at Republicans for making such a big deal over BJs in the Oval Office. Yup, just a geezer who remembers the wall of separation set up by Jamie Gorelick to keep Clinton from being prosecuted over Witewater which led to the attack on 9/11.

I guess I'm a conspiracy believer who thinks 9/11 was Clinton's fault, not GW's, and that the Weapons of Mass Destruction the NY Times finally admitted existed were originally sold to the public by the Clinton's to help get the Democrats on board for the war on Iraq.

Those were the good old days when we used to rip apart fake politicians for trying too hard to fit into our club, instead of ripping the messengers for noticing a fake when we see one.

Yea, that was before FreeRepublic jumped the Shark.

Lost me here. Trump has no political record. He has statements he's made at various times in his life that run the gamut of the political spectrum. But they are essentially meaningless and could be attributed to context or a deal that was going on at the time. Right now, today, he's offering conservative principles. That's the only political record he has. He's a clean slate and it comes down to whether you believer what's he's saying is true. I think it is based on the fact that he's written that you have to keep your promises when it comes to striking any big deal. I believe him.

Exactly, Calvinism, he was born righteous!

I agree with you on that also... but I can’t cast stones over her adult children causing her embarrassment. We thought we raised ours right. The oldest is now 40 and the youngest just turned 34. They have done a lot that we are proud of, but I hope that we are not judged too often by their screw-ups.

Seriously? You spent the weekend culling thru the posts of Trump supporters? Are you putting them into an EXCEL spreadsheet to use against them down the line during the primary?

Did you note the owner has said good things about Trump?

A lot of the Trump supporters actually have been here a lot longer than 8 years (and frankly, 8 years is a pretty long time IMHO).

We all know this is an open forum, but I doubt most of us suspect a fellow Freeper would be viewing and categorizing our posting history. Seriously! It is something I would expect from the NSA, not a fellow Freeper! It is intrusive!

Though I am sure that my reply to you will now land me on some future search list of yours, you should know that I REALLY FIND THIS VERY CREEPY OF YOU, and I think you need to go find a hobby.

Of course. And then did fairly well. I'm not sure how it could have been done better without throwing out all "religion" entirely.

Which if they had done so, would have brought the nation's founding principles to the being under assault by present-times Godlessness of the left wing even faster than it has.

You had set up a theoretical, then made a comparison which would have had the U.S. ending up as equivalent with Iran.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough, but to make the comparison level, then those of Iran too would have to have everything boiled down to one single passage of what among themselves is authoritative religious text.

Hey, why stop there?

What if it were to also be boiled down here in the USA, to one single passage of text from among what Bible-rejecting atheists would accept as authoritative?

They could not consult now with the Constitution, not without ignoring, fully setting aside the most basic and fundamental premises which provided foundation for that document to arise in the first place, leaving that text (and thus themselves also, whenever leaning upon that) bereft of standing as authoritative, and so would need to turn elsewhere.

Toss the premises aside which gave standing for the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution becomes just another instruction manual that was produced by government ---making it out to be that our rights are not inalienable for having been bestowed upon man by "Nature's God", as the founder's of this nation wrote of that entity--- but instead that our rights are derived and "bestowed" upon us by the largess of government itself.

That was not the framer's intent.

I am concerned about the nastiness of the Trump supporters on the site.

You are sadly mistaken if you think Trump supporters have cornered the nastiness market. Saturday nite, a thread I was shut down due to Cruz supporters...

I’m concerned about the idiocy of Trump supporters.

I’m not coming here as much. I’ll be back after Cruz wins SC.

And I should add that the “Bizzarro World” is that in addition to your data collection, all through the thread, you think you are taking the high ground whilst judging everyone else.

That is highly commendable. What is lacking across the full spectrum is active protest against things that are not going well. There is no outrage when appropriate. That is how we got to where we are now.

Our elected officials for whom we actually help elect rarely represent us in Congress.

The nastiness is pervasive across this site. I’ve been a member of FR quite a while now and it does get a bit heated around the elections, but what I’ve seen now is beyond reason for Free Republic.

Trump AND Cruz are splitting the conservative base.

I wish we could all take a step back and observe what all this vitriol between us is actually doing. It isn’t good.

I did not trust him from the get go.

After watching the movie...it appears to me...He has not changed a lick.

Lie, cheat, make things up, when caught laugh it off...

Threaten to sue..when you don't get your way. Buy people off...

Take it right to the line..and over the line.

Does not care about people...unless they have something to give to him...or something he wants.

Trojan Horse?....yep could be.

You have a problem with reading comprehension I see.

I did not like Romney, but 4 years ago you probably did since Trump and Romney have the same past record of what they supported.

See, I knew Romney would lose, and he did.

Trump is in many ways like Romney, but while Romney was met with universal dislike here, Trump being the same kind of man is not.

I am consistent, I dislike both for the same reason. They are liberals trying to be conservatives.

I will note, when reading through the posts almost every pro Trump post is bitter, angry, attacking, accusing.

Yes, I agree. They seem to be wishing him into being their guy more than he is. Just too many things about the guy that really scares me.

I do believe we are in the end times, whether it come in 10 years or 100. In the vast scheme of things even 100 years is like a nano second.

When I hear Trump I hear the same kind of rhetoric I heard from Obama and tens of millions bought into it. Well, now we have our Obama, and his name is Trump.

What really disturbs me is I am connected with hundreds of good born again Christians who know the word and always converse with me about it. However, many like Trump, or they re undecided and keep saying they lean to Ted Cruz but are not sure and they keep saying they like what they hear from Trump.

Talk about scratching those itchy ears. That is what Trump is doing, and they are falling asleep to his rhetoric like a dog in your lap when you scratch their ears.

Every time I read a Christian posting things they like about Trump, I am reminded of Paul's warning to Timothy about scratching those itchy ears.
