Has FreeRepublic Jumped The Shark With Trump?
2/14/16 | OV

Posted on 02/14/2016 9:47:13 PM PST by OneVike

I have been a member of FreeRepublic since February 1998, and in all my years I have ever seen so many Freepers support, and defend such a leftist candidate as Donald Trump. In the old days, any candidate that spouted the rhetoric coming out of his mouth would have been received with unanimous hatred from Freepers.

Mitt Romney was met with scorn when he claimed to have changed and was more conservative than his record showed. However, The Donald says the same thing and he is allowed to wear his liberal record as badge of honor, because he has been born again. Never mind that his fruit smells like Skubala. Any Republican candidate in the past who supported partial birth abortion was considered dead on arrival with 99.9% of Freepers. Yet a vast number of Freepers today look at Trump's defense of PP, and attack the candidate who dares to bring it up at a debate.

Thinking I have stumbled in some black hole of Bizzaro World, I decided to spend most the night, after the debate yesterday, researching past posts and comments of many Freepers who support Trump. I must admit that I wasn't too shocked to see that not all, but the vast majority, of his supporters have joined FR within the last 8 years. However I pretty much only searched the opinions of his most ardent supporters.

Interestingly enough, the ones I researched, all demanded that both Houses of Congress go after Planned Parenthood for selling baby parts. Many of them even demanded that the House use their power of the purse to defund PP. Yet these very same individuals defend, and make excuse for Trump's defense of said abortion factory, or at least claim it's bothersome but will still support him. These same individuals, however, were demanding McConnell resign for failing to pass legislation in the senate defunding PP. I did similar searches on their opinions of various other topics that Trump defends which would normally be cause of revulsion from these supporters had it been any other politician.

Well, I must admit that I am rather stunned by the way they have so easily changed their stances.

Who would have known that those who accused Jimmy Carter of never meeting a dictator and communist he didn't like, would now tout that his endorsement of Trump is not Trumps problem, and some even claim it will help him with Democrat voters in November. So we are now to welcome a politician that will get votes from leftists?

I thought the idea was to win them over to conservatism, not to abandon our beliefs just to get them to vote for our guy. So when will Freepers decide we need to change our stances on topics like "Black Lives Matter" to get more blacks to vote for our guy, or maybe we can find a good Muslim candidate who has made billions and talks a good game. Hey, so what if he may support Sharia law, just think of all those Muslim votes we can get from refugees Obama shipped in and we could actually own Dearborn Michigan. There has got to be some great female politicians who support PP that we could get behind, After all, we do have a problem with the female vote, right?

Yea, I'm just an old timer with old time values from the days when The Donald was still giving money to the Clintons and laughing at Republicans for making such a big deal over BJs in the Oval Office. Yup, just a geezer who remembers the wall of separation set up by Jamie Gorelick to keep Clinton from being prosecuted over Witewater which led to the attack on 9/11.

I guess I'm a conspiracy believer who thinks 9/11 was Clinton's fault, not GW's, and that the Weapons of Mass Destruction the NY Times finally admitted existed were originally sold to the public by the Clinton's to help get the Democrats on board for the war on Iraq.

Those were the good old days when we used to rip apart fake politicians for trying too hard to fit into our club, instead of ripping the messengers for noticing a fake when we see one.

Yea, that was before FreeRepublic jumped the Shark.

Proof?

And Trump is owned.

By banks and by his own ego.

I’ve passively mentioned this a few times.. but back off.. It’s getting too nasty and gives me a headache trying to read some of this screed. I have been watching from the sidelines, or just completely skipping over threads because I already know the vile hate going on inside :/

I have been quiet for a bit because of this.

Just know, you are not alone.

Spot on, bravo.

There have been many voices on FR saying what you have so eloquently stated. I am not certain that I understand the whole dynamic, but, I know one thing, after the first rush of exhilaration in the defiance of the PC crowd, the Donald wore thin fast, as I assumed he would for any real conservatives.

I guess I’m a dinosaur. I remember watching Nixon run and resign, Carter f up Iran, and RR riding in to save the day. That was the first election I volunteered for. DT is no RR.

I question any Christian who would support a man who owns casinos and sells women and men peddling their naked bodies for the gamblers taking a break

I think you would have a real difficult time getting that past Christ.

I don't see real Christians lying about their opponents the way Cruz does...I don't see real Christians taking millions of dollars from a couple of homosexual donators who no doubt expect something in return for their donations...You think that's doing the work of Jesus???

Fact is, the one who stands out as a real Christian in the bunch is Kasich...Let's all us Christians throw in with him if being a Christian is the litmus test...

The two main points that you make:

1. Bush lied. If you look at the transcript, you see that Trump immediately corrected himself and said “based on lies.” Even that is wrong, in a way, because it turns out they weren’t lies. It’s the prevailing “wisdom” that there were no WMDs but as we know that has been proven wrong. There were WMDs.

2. Planned Parenthood. They really do NOT do that much that is helpful. There is another prevailing opinion that they do mammograms. They don’t. They give you a list of places that do but spend no money of their own on actual mammograms. Anyone following the news should know this. And abortions are such a large part of their business, partly financed by the selling of baby body parts, that they should be defunded.

I am still a Trump supporter but have to quibble with him on these two points. I’m sure supporters of other candidates have problems with their own candidates too. No one is perfect.

His wife is paid $800,000 per year by Goldman Sachs and you ignore that because you hate Trump so bad.

He is a puppet for GS and you are fine because he is Saint Cruz and you worship his purity.

Ted Cruz ran for the Senate on building a wall but Trump supporters don’t even bother themselves with the fact that his plan is identical to Hutchinson’s policy...its touchback amnesty. I don’t understand how a businessman that admits to employing illegal aliens is supposedly the candidate to bring illegal immigration to an end. Tom Tancredo was always great on the issue but he never had this sort of support.

You Cruz supporters are good at telling half truths...Initially Cruz wasn't going to involve the illegals who were settled in and comfortably collecting welfare benefits...His only plan was to get rid of the illegals who were committing crimes...Now there's a plan for ya...

Then Cruz escalated his plan and now talks about removing those illegals from the welfare roles...They'll have no choice but to go back to Mexico...

Really??? And how many Americans are then going to get robbed and killed by very hungry, cold illegal aliens who were once on the welcome wagon???

You guys then put a name on Trump's plan and liken it to a big dose of poison we have to take...Trump said he will deport ALL of them and allow the good ones back in AS THEY ARE NEEDED...

Trump also plans to get those 94,000,000 legal Americans to work who have given up on looking for work...And once the illegals leave, there's going to be some openings in the work force...

The illegals under Trump's plan will come back as legals as/if there are openings in the work force that Americans citizens can't fill...And none of them will come back to again go on welfare...And that's the rest of the story...

Go back and read wardaddy’s comment in context. He was being sarcastic with the term. The OP was making a point that supporting Trump is wrong because of the OPs religious beliefs, and wardaddy was pointing out that some well thought of religious leaders didn’t have the same objections.

Thanks for posting this. I feel exactly the same way. It is crazy the way that Trump supporters are willing to throw away every issue that we have all fought for and every conservative voice that we have all respected in order to continue to support Donald Trump.

You guys are long on talk but extremely short on details...Why don't you list these issues that you guys fought for that Trump is going to eliminate???

Hey, there's a reason we support Trump and that is because he is going way, way beyond any conservative issues you guys have dreamed up...

Don't throw in those phoney untruths like - Trump is for universal health care ie. single payer...That would be a lie...And the one that Trump supports abortion...That would be another lie...And that Trump is anti-second amendment...That's another one...

So what are the real positions of Trump that you guys so hate???

If every Cruz supporter at FR somehow managed to convert every FR Trump supporter, or if every Trump supporter at FR somehow managed to convert every FR Cruz supporter, the outcome of the election would be exactly the same.

But the most rabid members of each of the two warring gangs are so involved with their own personal fantasies and power trips that they are completely unable to see the futility and destructiveness of what they are doing.

They somehow think that just one more repost of an article, a photoshopped picture posted dozens of times, or endlessly reposted screeds randomly salted with giant fonts, bolding, and caps locking will finally do the trick.

But worst of all, they think that just one more insult will convert the unbeliever, and they think that just one more retelling of a lie will turn that lie into truth.

Give it up, people, it’s not going to change anything.

I’m shaking my head right along with you. Thank you for the detailed report of their(FR Trump supporters) hypocrisy. It has been stunning to watch, not only on this site, but on others as well. I’m more frightened now than previous elections, and with Scalia’s death, quite frankly I’m numb.

I’ve also been here since 1998. Supporting Trump. That position is well-thought out and based on the history of the back-stabbing Republican party that has let us down since I’ve been on this site. Nothing and no none we stood has followed through on any issue important to our well-being as a nation. Trump busts up the liars and vows to change all of it. I want to give him a chance, because no one else will even vow to do so. If he fails or reneges, then that won’t be any different than what we’ve had for the past 20 years or so.

Serious question.

Can a conservative be a person who does not share your religion/faith? What about a Catholic? How about a Jew? What about Agnostics? People who do not believe the Bible is a literal science book, and God is a greater power who deserves respect, but is not our buddy?

I don’t mean to start a religious war, but there are people of all religious beliefs—or not—on Free Republic who consider themselves conservatives.

Because if part of the reasoning you like Cruz and despise Trump is due to your religious or faith issues, well, you are more than welcome to have those views or even share them with others.

However, if you are saying that anyone who supports Trump is not a conservative, or is stupid, or is anti-God, well, that’s just your bias showing.

Conservative <> Evangelical, protestant Christian.

Git yer facts straight - Trump denounced abortion but acknowledged that PP has resources that could be used for good. Christ don’t like lies by omission either...

The PuriCons, those high priests of religious and conservative purity, tell me that Ted is just like Ronald Reagan. Except nobody really likes him, but shut your mouth you infidel because the reason nobody likes him is because he is just like Reagan and everybody liked Reagan. No wait, that doesn’t work...

In the age of mass marketing and mass media, Trump is ascendant because he knows how it works and has mastered it. The PuriCons can piss and moan all they want, but the train has already left the station.

Go Trump

And let us not shine a light on Donald....
Because he is not a politician does not mean we accept his voting record.
(He actually supported Jimmy Carter over Reagan, just let that marinate a bit) when we were all marching on DC because of what Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, Rangle and the likes were about to do to us with Obamacare ramming it down our throats, where was Donald?
We busted are butts to try to elect conservatives. Donald was still making deals not giving a witt about conservative struggles. He turned his attention to building a reality empire.
If you are so hell bent on electing the Donald, be ready to feel the pain again of, “the transformation of America”.
That’s my .02

Thank you God, for OneVike posting exactly what I think. I am stunned that this site has become SO VERY liberal, over what??? A wall that Cruz has said all along he’ll build as well??

I see the stupidest links as breaking news. Some father of a guy killed by an illegal says trump was sent by God and that is breaking news? Trumps events are all breaking news?

What’s happened to us? I always felt this site was an oasis, away from the horrors of the crumbling real world. Now it’s part of it.

I’ve seen 2 threads deleted by Jim Robinson about Trump stating his sister would make a great SCJ even though she’s a flaming liberal. How does this happen?

Personally, I’m surprised your post wasn’t deleted.

Exactly the same thing here. I was a seven year old and brought chuckles to the polls when I yelled to make sure my parents voted for Goldwater.

RWR exuded honor, pride, and inspiration.

Trump exudes belligerence, narcissism, and derision. He is nothing but a carnival barking reality television star who has duped the voting populous with one liners and insults.

If we were electing a national court jester, he'd have my vote.
