Microsoft and its hardware partners have revealed the list of Intel Skylake-based PCs that will lose support after 18 months if the computers are downgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 7 or 8.1.
The software giant along with Dell, HP, Lenovo and NEC today outlined a list of 100 PCs that will fall victim to a policy change outlined by Microsoft earlier this month.
The company previously said it would support downgrades to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 until January 2020 and January 2023.
But on January 16, Microsoft backtracked on its pledge for newer hardware featuring Intel's Skylake processors.
It will now only support Skylake PCs that have been downgraded from Windows 10 until next year.

NSA ordered them to get everybody on Windows 10 so they can monitor everything they do.

= = =
I’ll put my Win 10 machine in a room with a dozen monkeys.
They can type continuously; I’ll supply food and water.
NSA can monitor them. Probably won’t be able to tell the difference between my monkeys and Hillary’s e-mail.
As a side benefit, they will invent Win 11.
Ever get the feeling that we are just cattle to be sent to slaughter? What made MS great was the fact that they supported their OSs for many years unlike Apple.
Linux is looking morre and more compelling. Nice to have that option.
You comment about Apple is incorrect. Apple has always supported their hardware/software mix much better than the gobs in Redmond
I wonder if Microsoft has opened it self up to law suit over tech support..businesses make decisions on what computers to buy based on how long tech support is expected
Too late. They already have backdoors installed in the ‘doze OS going back to NT 3.5 at least. Or so I have been told by people in the know.
Me, I’ll continue to use Linux and if the newest offerings from Intel won’t play nice, I am hopeful that other Mfg companies such as AMD will make some attractive options available.
I remember. MS-DOS was very popular and used in many circumstances for that very reason. Even competitors such as PC-DOS and DR-DOS found large followings, if not at the same level as the MS offerings.
However, remember the old saying: “One man’s OS/2 is another man’s Linux.” *grin*
Ping...
So you can install an OS 3 generations behind on a brand bew Apple computer and then Apple will support you?
Bullshirt.
Microsoft is trash. I hate them. I hate this. But I’m stuck using their trash. This new windows 10 is going to cost me nearly 10k in upgraded...EVERYTHING by the time this is done. All my engineering software needs to be upgraded. All my CNC software needs to be upgraded. The software companies won’t support the older stuff so guess what. New hardware, required windows 10 to keep current on the software I use.
THEN. To really insult the end user you can not turn off auto update with Windows 10. I was sitting working away on an in depth design engineering project when all of a sudden “WINDOWS IS UPGRADING” It gives no option to postpone or cancel. It gave no warning. It just closed all my open windows and downloaded for about 1 hour and I lost what wasn’t saved. There was no way to escape from this. What if I am sitting in a board room somewhere with clients? Complete and total trash. The only option you have now is to receive a warning before it auto updates and reboots.
One of my CNC controllers is infested with that god awful GWX.exe windows 10 nag screen. It no longer even asks if you want the windows 10. It says “Start upgrading now or wait until later.” I’ve gone so far as to have to write a script that gets that “Get Windows 10” crap but it still gets through.
I’m glad I have a stack of old notebooks that are off line but the nature of the software I use and the products I produce I’m forced to use Microsoft’s terrible crap OS. A curse on you Bill Gates.
Have you tried “GWX Stopper”...seemed to work on my mom’s Win 7 Pro machine.

(I am OS X as of 3 years ago, not looking back).
Right, then -ah, I am not familiar with “GWX Stopper” but if it is more than a couple of months old I am guessing that it is a simple shell script to ‘manually’ edit the registry files to delete the You-Want-To-Install-Win10 section, however it has been previously noted that in the last MS ‘upgrade’ or several, ‘doze now automatically (without your consent) checks to see if you have “upgraded” or not and resets the nag screen if you have not to ensure you are “safe”
-and “upgraded”.
Just FYI.
Intel Skylake CPUs are powering basically every midrange and high end notebook made in the last few years up to today’s date. Even if it’s a MacBook Pro.
I won’t say what I’ve got on my mind because it’ll sound like smarmy Apple fanboy crowing and I don’t intend to start any purse fights over platform preferences. I’ll let the readers of this article read between the lines and draw their own conclusions.
Oh, good grief yes. Quite.
Well, maybe the update business to Win 10 is not working as intended.....
Even if the conclusion is exactly what I surmised that Intel will soon be producing ‘doze-only chipsets because that will be a PR coup and all computing platforms should be of course running the latest ‘doze platform for maximum effectiveness?
Seems a bit lacking in alternatives...
I agree with most of your post, but in case you are not familiar with pretty much the coolest essay in the history of Linux/Unix:

You are probably correct...he upgrades “GWX Stopper” to try and keep up with M$, but it is probably a losing battle.
Consider that Macs are the only class of desktop still gaining market share and that Microsoft ultimately had to make Windows 10 free (and now mandatory) to keep it alive. Intel has great reason to see Microsoft succeed since it’s all about them staying alive in an age of Linux servers and free open source software. Their final solution may indeed be joining forces to officially become Wintel and shut everyone else out in the cold. I see Windows Server 2016 CPU-core licensing and notice that Intel didn’t throw a fit...
Unfortunately for their plans comes the ARM A9X.
Wait until Microsoft has to make Windows Server free... And mandatory.
