In our planet's early history, 720 to 640 million years ago, thick sheets of ice covered the majority of the surface, as the Earth was locked in a deep freeze.
But explosive underwater volcanoes changed the chemistry of the Earth's oceans and were key to breaking the planet from its icy state, according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of Southampton believe underwater volcanoes helped to thaw out "Snowball Earth", and even led to runaway chemical chain reactions, which created the conditions for an explosion of life on Earth.
While much of the driving forces behind glaciation during the "Snowball Earth" era is unclear, scientists believe the breakup of the super-continent Rodinia was fundamental to the climatic shift.
As the super-continent began to "unzip", tearing apart down the middle and breaking off into smaller land masses, it leached tons of sediment into the oceans.
This sediment acted as a sponge to suck up the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, robbing the planet of its heat trapping mechanism and causing the Earth to remain locked in cryostasis.
But explosive volcanic activity in the shallow oceans created in by the unzipping landmass spewed carbon dioxide into the air.
In addition, the sediment they pumped out - rich in calcium, magnesium and phosphorus - caused large mineral lumps, called cap carbonates to form, leading to a runaway chemical chain reaction which may have created an atmosphere much friendlier to life.

Show me anything modern that is fossilized. When we blow ourselves up and the next advanced civilization rises there will be a great amount of evidence of a previous civilization.
Say what?!?! What does that even mean?
UCANSEE2: “The existence of tropical forests under the miles of ice sheets might mean that those areas were part of the ‘tropics’ along the equator and Canada/North America might have been the ‘south pole’.”
Remember, the time frame for “snow ball Earth” was hundreds of millions of years BEFORE there were any forests, or other complex life of any kind.
We’re talking about Stromatilites and Algae under all that ice, not forests or critters.
Fungi: “Notice the basis for these time frames is never given, nor can be.
It is based upon a ‘religious faith’, independent of science, one that has so many assumptions it refutes its own premise, boggling the mind to to those who see the false premise. “
Total rubbish, there’s no “Religious faith” in natural-science, only the assumption that natural processes can have scientifically confirmable natural explanations.
In this particular example, it’s also assumed that natural processes operated the same in the deep past as they do today, so radioactive decay rates can tell us ages of various geological formations.
That’s where the estimates of “snow ball Earth” time periods come from.
Are such assumptions valid?
Well, they certainly seem to be, as more & more data from different sciences reconfirms, or falsifies, earlier conclusions.
Nothing “Religious faith” about it.
I’ve seen no evidence for God laughing at anything
My bad.
Now that there are more posts on the thread, I see others have some interesting theories, or arguments against theories. so it is becoming some interesting reading.
Thanks for straightening me out.

SierraWasp quoting King James, 1 Corinthians 2:14 “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
That term, here translated, “naural man,” is in other translations more appropriately rendered as, “non-spiritual” or “non-Christian”.
That’s because the term “Natural man” carries a suggestion of natural-science, which was certainly never the apostle Paul’s intention.
It might also suggest someone in a “state of nature” whom we could well expect to be highly spiritual.
So, Paul is talking about non-Christian, non-spiritual people who have no experience of the Holy Spirit, regardless of their other occupations or avocations.
Sure, they could be some of today’s scientists, but also anybody else matching the description.
Ever heard of Lyell and uniformatarianism?
Nope.
