i am using a borrowed laptop, an hp pavilion g7-1310us Notebook PC, running Windows 7. Last night the screen went black. i have no idea why. powering off and rebooting did nothing. i am thinking there must be some button or command that will turn the screen on. thanks in advance for help. p.s., HELPFUL comments welcome.

Same thing happened to me a few months back. Don’t remember how I fixed it, but I do remember the answer had to do with what is called the “Black Screen of Death”. Google it. It is generally fixable and not as fatal as the infamous “Blue Screen of Death”. Hope this helps.

It is such a standard meme we just assume it — maybe we take that meme for granted.

We should, all of us, in our hearts of hearts, examine how we uphold the dignity of our critical memes. I haven’t seen a beeber stuned in quite sometime and today I saw a moose bit my sister for the first time in quite some time.

A meme is a terrible thing to waste!

“They used to use a florescent lamp(s) to light the screen. They can be replaced, but if you are not doing it yourself the labor is likely non-economic.”

WAY easier just to replace the whole LCD panel, but even then, with an old laptop, not usually worth the expense.

Desktops for me.

I hate taking laptops apart and putting them back together even more.

Inexpensive tablets seem to be the wave of the future for me for anything remotely portable.

“I hate taking laptops apart and putting them back together even more.”

Indeed. I basically won’t repair a laptop anymore other than replacing the keyboard, RAM, HD, optical drive, sometimes the WiFI module.

But a GOOD laptop will last years and years and years. I’ve used Panasonic laptops now for a long time. Builtin 3-year USA warranty and support. My old XP ones still work, but bought new ones anyway to get more powerful hardware, W7, etc.

" RAM, HD, optical drive,"

Anything with an access panel designed for service is fair game and not really "taking it apart"

I had it on my toshiba a while back. had to read a boat load before I found one that worked.

#1 to save you time, only my cursor was showing. If you don’t have that I would say it was mechanical as opposed to what I had to do...I am a bookmark hoarder so if your cursor is working I’ll give you my links.

I think mine happened after an update.

If by chance you need a new laptop screen then you can do it yourself. Cost is about $120. Just use a credit card to pop out the frame then 4 or 5 screws after that. You buy the screen and a small circuit board that plugs into the motherboard.

In ‘09 I got an HP Pavilion laptop running Vista. This happened to me so I connected to an external monitor (which worked) and noticed that it wasn’t charging even when plugged in. Did some Googling. What worked for me was removing the power adapter from laptop, blowing hard into it, and replacing the power cord. I know it sounds odd, but it worked for me. Apparently, dust, etc., can mess with the connection. Anyhow, FWIW...

Hmmm. After trying most of the suggestions, I took hold of the screen by the right and left corners, and applied torque, gently. A couple of wiggles, and the screen came on.
