Confirmed: How to stop Windows 10 forcing itself onto PCs – your essential guide
The Register - UK ^ | January 8, 2016 | Iain Thomson

Posted on 01/09/2016 11:50:01 AM PST by ConservativeMind

If you're using a PC running Windows 7 or 8, you may be getting a little sick of endless popup screens telling you to upgrade to version 10. And you may be worried about inadvertently installing the upgrade as part of a security update.

Microsoft will start pushing out a Windows 10 upgrade as a recommended, virtually mandatory, update very soon (it's right now only an optional download). Some people are tempted to turn off Windows Update completely to avoid getting the new operating system – don't. It'll leave your computer vulnerable to attack as you'll no longer get security patches.

It's actually rather easy to turn off the Windows 10 upgrade function without losing vital regular software updates. Microsoft even has an official document explaining how to do it.

A Redmond spokesperson today confirmed that support page is still valid – its instructions still work even though it was quietly published a few months ago. It involves digging into the Registry to disable the Windows 10 upgrade path, but it's not impossible nor particularly scary for a Register reader.

I’ve never seen you help out anybody on the forum with computer problems, just bitch and moan about Windows 10.

Why is that?

“I’ve never seen you help out anybody on the forum with computer problems”

And you know this how?

“just bitch and moan about Windows 10.”

Is this like opposite land?

The people that “bitch and moan” are the ones that constantly, whenever their is ANY post about Microsoft or Windows, post the same erroneous cliched nonsense that quickly makes virtually all topics on this subject just tech illiterate people screaming bloody murder about things they have no clue about, but are confident enough to say Microsoft did it to them, or the same 3 Linux dudes that show up to hawk Linux Mint.

Why dont you pose that question to them? Frankly most of the time I skip the stories because there is rarely much of substance in the comments.

“M$ is shoving this down my throat” <- because they saw a popup.

Like what are you even supposed to say to something that stupid?

Even the very premise of the story posted is fictitious as Windows 10 isnt “forcing itself onto PCs”, as even the article itself had to weasel-word itself into admitting.

[[I`m still interested in LINUX programs but I tried downloading Ubuntu last year and it crashed my computer to the point I had to take it to the Geek Squad to reload my Windows.]]

Run it from a disk instead of installing it- and you could run it inside a sandbox or virtual machine

Well then keep an eye on yourself, because at no point is MS taking your mouse, moving it over, and forcing you to do it.

You must have exquisite inherent control of both your mental faculties and your coordination. Many's the time I tried to close a pop up window and accidentally activated it.

Sorry. I'm not super human like you are. I sometimes make a mistake with my hand-eye coordination, or through carelessness.

Being the non-perfect human being that I am, I would prefer if a horrible system altering Pop up would not "pop up." You may be perfectly happy with a bunch of annoying pop ups, because you obviously have the brain power and coordination to deal with them like a super hero. I would prefer it if people would stop trying to make me look at pop ups that I don't want to look at in the first place. How about I go to them if I want to upgrade? Why nag? I don't like nagging.

Well then dont install it. Like what is it with the constant “I’m a victim” thing? You are an adult. Do adult things like not doing things you dont want.

You've got it backwards. I'm not a "victim", because I keep refusing to be a victim. What I would prefer is that someone didn't keep trying to make me into a victim. How about Microsoft just leave me the F*** alone? How about that?

Well then why are you even using computers?

I was using computers before Microsoft, Apple, or Google were a "thing". I was programing machine code at 15, and have been using computers my whole life. I build stuff using computers and microprocessors for which people pay me money. One does not need Google, Microsoft, or Apple to use computers. The usage of computers does not require the patronage of any of the above companies.

Where at any point you run into an “issue” you can then scream at them (or whomever), because Linux, despite what the people on FR that constantly hawk it say, is no magic OS that free you from all your tech troubles, it just makes those troubles next to impossible to fix because there usually aren’t anyone to run to make it go away easily.

This might be a problem for the housewives on Facebook or something, but it is generally not a problem that I or my circle of tech friends have.

I use Windows because up till now because it has been convenient. When it starts becoming a pest, i'm gonna dump it.

I noticed one weird thing that happened to my computer when I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10. Pissed me off, too.

It changed my password to my Microsoft Store (?) account’s password.

It did this when I downloaded a couple of programs from Microsoft’s website that were formerly packaged with Windows 7 (and XP before that, IIRC). Why Microsoft decided to remove those formerly free, included-in-the-OS-and-somewhat-useful programs is beyond me.

#1 - Do you offhand know how to get my password back, but different than the Microsoft Store password? Of course I can Google it, but since you seem to be an expert in Win 10, I was hoping you’d save me some search time.

#2 - Do you know why Microsoft removed the programs they did? I’m assuming they did so in version 8 as well, but I don’t have access to that to verify it.

#8 I would agree except that nagging spying issue. Sure you think you turned off everything in the settings but Microsoft will ‘accidentally’ turn back on as they have already done so. The gather of all your information happens I believe regardless of the settings so when the switch goes from No to Yes in Privacy then all your personal file names, email names, bookmarks, history etc is uploaded and you never get back your privacy.

I had been running Ubuntu for quite some time. I got a small notebook with Windows 10 this time.

Been thinking of moving to Linux. I value independence quite a lot.

That said, I am not planning on using it for anything nefarious. Then again I don’t do anything nefarious. Maybe others should be more cautious.

I'm not doing anything nefarious either, but as the insane kooks running society now keep redefining good and evil, I cannot rule out the need to do nefarious things in the future. Eventually, not bowing to the gods of Homosexuality and Political correctness will become regarded as "nefarious."

As Ayn Rand pointed out, they keep making laws so they can eventually snare anyone they wish. Note how the Germans now prosecute anyone criticizing Muslim immigrants. Note how the Democrats are trying to pass a similar law in this country.

Eventually, just being normal will be regarded as "nefarious" by the societal powers that be.

It defaults to the MS store account as opposed to the local account log-in with 7. This is how to switch it back.

Which ones did they remove? You mean solitaire?

John- You’ll have to keep hiding tht KB update each time you manually run the windows update program- even htough we hide it- it keeps coming back trying to sneak it’s way into our download/update-

Also there are a number of other updates to windows 7-8 that act like the windows 10 spyware-

Also uninstall the following because they are doing windows spying on you too

* 3068708

* 3022345

* 3075249

* 3080149

“I’ve never seen you help out anybody on the forum with computer problems”

And you know this how?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Know what? That I haven’t seen you help anybody on the forum with computer problems?
You helping others on this forum with computer problems is something I HAVE NOT SEEN. This is a TRUE STATEMENT. I KNOW IT because it is a SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCE.
You MAY have helped somebody on the forum with computer problems, but I HAVE NEVER SEEN IT.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why dont you pose that question to them? Frankly most of the time I skip the stories because there is rarely much of substance in the comments.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Because I’m trying to figure out your motivation.
You seem to take every opportunity to sling insults around in threads about Windows 10, even to people who use it and are not Linux fanboys.
So tell me, this time without textwalls, why that is?
Thanks, I’ll take a look at that.
LOL! I’m not worried about that one.
The one that got my goat was that Remote Desktop (which I had start using more for my job) was messed up by Windows 10.
I tried using the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store, but it turned out to be a horrid piece of trash that was more artistic than useful. It didn’t play well with my organization’s VPN.
I finally found an old version of Remote Desktop online somewhere and reinstalled it, which fixed whatever corruption had occurred once I turned it on via Control Panel.
He makes himself out to be a database admin or something; he mentioned looking at databases in the last thread tantrum.
I know some smart database admins, but they usually don’t know squat about the nuts and bolts of tech. Usually, when it’s Microsoft fanboys, it’s a reaction to fears about obsolescence of Microsoft SQL Server versus MySQL/Oracle.
I’ve hit the skids of skillset obsolescence before. The whole “denial-anger-bargaining-etc” thing comes into play really quick.
“You seem to take every opportunity to sling insults around in threads about Windows 10, even to people who use it and are not Linux fanboys.”
So what are my “insults”?
“You helping others on this forum with computer problems is something I HAVE NOT SEEN.”
I haven’t seen you helping anyone on this forum with financial problems. So please explain to me when you stopped beating your wife.
See? That is how your statement makes no sense to me. I’m sorry you haven read everything I wrote, but your conclusions are based on your incomplete knowledge of myself, which does not constitute my responsibility to debunk your personal conclusions.
“Because I’m trying to figure out your motivation.”
I dont have a motivation. I use Win10, would like to discuss subjects on it, and rarely find anything engaging on FR because the Windows (anything) topics are filled with the usual same people, posting the same nonsense.
Hell I dont care if you use it or not. Happen to be on the site when this story popped up. I actually get the pings for MS stories. I respond to maybe 0.5% of them.
Wow. Because the little circle of people you met are apparently stupid, you extrapolate that into “Oh everyone that does X are”?
And my entire usage of PC is limited to that? Seriously?
That’s the type of illogical nonsense I have no patience for with people that CLAIM to be tech literate.
So why dont you post your OP from that thread. I DARE you to show everyone here your VAST tech knowledge by posting that.
I have followed the directions outlined in the last post (authored by a FReeper from a previous thread) and I have never seen that offensive pop-up or its root update again. It has been 6-8 weeks of pop-up free existence.
Once a week, I look for updates from MS to manually install and that offensive update has never reappeared.
Thanks for the list of added offenders.
I set up my pc to dual boot Linux Mint and Windows 10. I spend 99% of the time running mint. Mouse scrolling was a little slow and jerky in Mint. I found a fix for that:
.
Speed Up Firefox mouse scrolling in Linux Mint
To speed up mouse scrolling speed in Firefox in Linux Mint. This also works in Pale Moon browser.
Also makes scrolling smoother and less jumpy.
(This also works in other Ubuntu based distros.)
In the Firefox URL field type,
about:config
and press Enter.
In the Search field type,
mouse
Double-click on...
mousewheel_system_scroll_override_on_root_content.enabled, default, boolean, false
to toggle it to true.
The line will now be displayed as:
mousewheel_system_scroll_override_on_root_content.enabled, user set , boolean, true
Click on the Firefox top menu
Edit, Preferences,
Click on
Advanced, General
Make sure
[X] Use Smooth Scrolling
is checked.
This speeds up my mouse scrolling considerably in Firefox.
