If you're using a PC running Windows 7 or 8, you may be getting a little sick of endless popup screens telling you to upgrade to version 10. And you may be worried about inadvertently installing the upgrade as part of a security update.
Microsoft will start pushing out a Windows 10 upgrade as a recommended, virtually mandatory, update very soon (it's right now only an optional download). Some people are tempted to turn off Windows Update completely to avoid getting the new operating system â don't. It'll leave your computer vulnerable to attack as you'll no longer get security patches.
It's actually rather easy to turn off the Windows 10 upgrade function without losing vital regular software updates. Microsoft even has an official document explaining how to do it.
A Redmond spokesperson today confirmed that support page is still valid â its instructions still work even though it was quietly published a few months ago. It involves digging into the Registry to disable the Windows 10 upgrade path, but it's not impossible nor particularly scary for a Register reader.

You might wish to try Knoppix Linux. It can boot off a usb stick or a DVD drive.
You can even install it on your hard drive. It comes with tons of software already loaded. It even includes the LibreOffice group of programs. I did my Christmas cards with that this year. Ubuntu is good, but Knoppix gives you more applications to play with.
I'm not sure what you are getting at. Yes, Microsoft is badgering me constantly to upgrade to Windows 10. Every time I start the machine, and sometimes when it's running, I get these endless pop up windows URGING me to update to Windows 10, and I keep worrying that one day I might accidentally hit that button.
No, I don't want Windows 10. I don't even want Windows 7. (it sucks.) No, I don't need Microsoft "helping" me manage my usage or browsing, what I need Microsoft to do is to leave me the F*** alone apart from providing subsequently discovered vulnerability updates, so long as they don't compromise my privacy.
Yes, Microsoft has become as Fascist as Google. No doubt they look enviously on Google's Data mining operations and wonder how they can force people to give them some of that information goodness!
Well I don't give a flying flip about Microsoft's profits. I hate that company. Everything they do more or less sucks. I hate Google and Apple too, but for mostly different reasons.
I am seriously contemplating telling the whole lot to go to H3ll and switching to Linux. The one thing I am getting sick of in this age of resurgent fascism is other people trying to force me to do stuff that I don't want to do.

At least I am happy with it so far.
You do know that it is eventually going to inform Microsoft (and through them the government) about everything you do on that machine?
Nazi Soldiers might be very good soldiers, but my primary focus when selecting soldiers is that they be on the same side as I am.
Most folks are recommending MINT now instead of Ubuntu. If you have an older computer with limited resources, however, some of the other distros might be a better bet.
Before you load LINUX on your computer, set your computer to boot from the CD drive first (if you have one) or from USB if you don’t. (That’s harder to set up than it used to be if you already have Win10 on your computer, but it can be done).
Then, after you burn Linux to your removable drive, boot from that drive instead of your hard drive. That will let you see how the distro works with your computer without making any changes to your machine. If you like it, you can put it on your hard drive to use instead of windows. If it doesn’t work, discard it and try another.
They aren’t keeping it updated any more, but Puppy will work on almost any old windows computer, but doesn’t have some of the functionality of the larger distros, and might not have drivers for newer hardware. (If you have an old Win98 machine lying around, Puppy is your dog).
Spend some time on Distrowatch looking at the features of the various top releases. http://distrowatch.com/
Good luck and have fun.
Get a new HDD (or, even better, an SSD) for your computer and remove/save your existing hard drive. Then install the fresh hard drive and load Linux Mint 17.3 LTS (long term support). If you have trouble downloading the OS via the internet, get a disk from osdisc.com for $6. Boot from that, see if you like it and then click install.
Installation should take 15 to 30 minutes. You don’t have to do anything except pick time zone, user name/password.
LOL!
Keep beating up against those rocks.
It still doesn’t erase your embarrassingly bad original post.
“Oooooh let me shame him! That will make my argument”!
M4L Win 10 (evil)
You can refer to the below mentioned steps to hide an update.
Press Window key + X.
Select Control Panel from the list.
Under view by option select large icons.
And then click either Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
Now click on important updates available (recommended).
Click to clear the check box that is next to the KB3035583 update.
Expand the KB3035583 update that you want to hide, and then click the "Don't show this update again" check box or in my case with Windows 8.1, "hide" .
Click Review and install updates.
Just use this tool:
GWX Control Panel
This is a free tool that can remove and disable the ‘Get Windows 10’ notification area icon on Windows 7 and Windows 8. Recent versions can also disable ‘Upgrade to Windows 10’ behavior in the Windows Update control panel and do much more. See the user guide at the Ultimate Outsider blog. You can still download GWX Control Panel as a standalone executable if you don’t like installers. Please see the “GWX CONTROL PANEL RELEASE NOTES” section at the user guide for MD5 and SHA-1 checksums of all official releases.

I’ve done it on 3 of my PCs with no problem.
Save for future use.
Thanks!
I have troubles with Edge browser
“The bastards will not force deceitfully trick me into installing an operating system
Better? “
They still aren’t doing that either.
There’s a vid on youtube explaining how to keep Windows 10 from exploiting your privacy. It runs over 10 minutes, due to the myriad settings strewn all about the interface.
“I get these endless pop up windows URGING me to update to Windows 10, and I keep worrying that one day I might accidentally hit that button. “
Well then keep an eye on yourself, because at no point is MS taking your mouse, moving it over, and forcing you to do it.
“No, I don’t want Windows 10. I don’t even want Windows 7. (it sucks.) No, I don’t need Microsoft “helping” me manage my usage or browsing, what I need Microsoft to do is to leave me the F*** alone apart from providing subsequently discovered vulnerability updates, so long as they don’t compromise my privacy. “
Well then dont install it. Like what is it with the constant “I’m a victim” thing? You are an adult. Do adult things like not doing things you dont want.
“Well I don’t give a flying flip about Microsoft’s profits. I hate that company. Everything they do more or less sucks. I hate Google and Apple too, but for mostly different reasons. “
Well then why are you even using computers?
“I am seriously contemplating telling the whole lot to go to H3ll and switching to Linux”
Where at any point you run into an “issue” you can then scream at them (or whomever), because Linux, despite what the people on FR that constantly hawk it say, is no magic OS that free you from all your tech troubles, it just makes those troubles next to impossible to fix because there usually aren’t anyone to run to make it go away easily.
Well I just upgraded my pc.
I had been running Ubuntu for quite some time. I got a small notebook with Windows 10 this time.
That said, I am not planning on using it for anything nefarious. Then again I don’t do anything nefarious. Maybe others should be more cautious.
:D
Or are you still smarting about that pathetic “Old ladies are installing it via deception” post you made? Good lord that still ranks up there as one of the most absurd things written about Win 10.
Some people think that posting on FR is nefarious!
Seriously my privacy belongs to me, even though I don’t do anything nefarious.
In fact outside of work and family I don’t have very much going on.
