Raqqa, Syria
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, also known as ISIS, announced today that he would be disbanding all forces and returning all land to Syria and Iraq. The move was prompted by the ongoing Climate Conference in Paris.
"This is one thing we could not have anticipated," Mr. al-Baghdadi said in prepared remarks. "When we see the world coming together like this on such a dangerous subject as Global Climate Change, we realize that our Caliphate will never survive. It's only a matter of time before Climate Change is no more and the world's attention turns to us. At that point, we will have no chance. For the sake of the men, women, and children who have supported us, I can not continue a doomed campaign."
An emotional al-Baghdadi did not take any questions.
Sources close to al-Baghdadi who spoke on the condition of anonymity told us that it was becoming more and more difficult to recruit new fighters. "Even our existing people are extremely demoralized," one said. "The words of Donald Trump himself can not overcome our dispair."
According to their press release, surrender is total and immediate. Fighters are being paid and sent home by division. Any remaining money will be put into a fund to resettle Christians and Yazidis who have been displaced by the war.
"We thought the world was fragmented," one strategist was overheard saying to himself. "Who knew it could come together like this? This is a stinging rebuke."
So far there has been no comment from Damascus, Baghdad, Moscow, or Washington. One source inside the Kremlin said, "We are waiting to see if there will be any follow-up action. We want to make sure this is real before we decide on our next steps."
I don’t have Win-tin-tin so we have to experiment a little a bit.
Open the search thingie which used to be in the Windows button and type “Device Manager.” I actually call it the device mangler but you’ll never find it that way.
(This works in Win 7, you may have to flex a little. If’n you see something different and can’t figger it out, just ask.) Once it’s open you’ll see some catagories with little triangles next to them. Click the triangle next to Mice and other pointing devices.
Right-click on the mouse and pick “Uninstall.” Let Win-tin-tin do it’s thing.
You might have to unplug and re-plug the mouse and it will say “Installing driver software.” Or it might say that right away. Once it says “Your device is ready to use” you should be good to go.
I think I’ve reached the maximum limit on bookcases for my little apartment. I have four and I’m “culling the herd” but with an eye to adding more of real substance. Most novels are going to be donated.
Bethesda MD, one of the most affluent suburbs at one time had two outstanding used bookstores with estate sale treasures. And not just books, old LP’s, auction and museum catalogs.
Picked up an museum exhibition book of William Blake's works with outstanding color prints for $5 !
Added some very fine first editions for less than $50. All my C.S. Lewis books were bought second hand with some clearly never read.
I had set aside one Saturday a month for nearly all day browsing, bring the owners fresh rolls and coffee to get first views of new acquisitions and helping by first sort/classification. Found many that were gems for me, for other folk maybe not.
And of course, all the cats as required by the secret guild by laws.
deep sigh.....
OK. I will try that. I will have to copy and past this, as I’m not good with oral directions.
:o|
The Book Lady has a large establishment - she’s expanded twice since we started going there - in a ramshackle retail strip on the US Highway. She doesn’t have cats, but there are usually at least two dogs there, including a standard poodle.
I learned long ago why soup kitchens were in place aside from economics. Offered a fellow a fresh wrapped deli sandwich in a bag. 10 seconds later he was shouting at my back, “WTH am I going to do with this, got no F’n teeth!”. We don't often think of things like that.
I need to figure out what to do with the foreign language books, such as Baudelaire’s, ‘ Les Fleurs du Mal’ and such. Along with technical textbooks from the 30’s and later. German and French ebay?
YAY!!! I fixed it!! (For now, anyway.) And I disabled the touchpad. Yay, me!!
Even Amazon has a French section...
for second hand books?
yay....set backup point?
My Used Book Lady has a friendly collie.
Yessiree! I buy used books on Amazon all the time. They have new, used, and audio books. I can’t afford full price for books, so I always look for used. Some of them are under a dollar, and some are new but reduced price.
No, it was just the mouse that was wonky, this time. I just installed Win-Tin-Tin, and the mouse began acting up a week into it. It’s fixed now, and I will know what to do next time.
You could just read “Fleurs du Mal” again. Poetry never gets passe. Old textbooks, on the other hand ...
The poodle’s name is Josie, and she sniffs customers’ shoes and slobbers.
I’ll pass on Fleurs du Mal, but I’ll take an Idylls by Tennyson.
As for old textbooks, I have an astronomy book from college that is really out of date. Jupiter has 12 moons, Saturn 9 and Pluto is still a planet.
What’s really fun- my dad’s chemistry book from 57. The periodic table is a hoot! I think it had 80 something on the chart. And his history book ends with Eisenhower as president.
We have been discussing getting a new American history text. One that’s presently on our shelf (middle-school level) ends with a chapter called, “Two Recent Presidents: Truman and Eisenhower.”
Where I’ve been the last two months.
Hi guys. I could really use some FRiends right now but I think I need IRL.
I don’t know if I mentioned but I’ve been walking with a limp for the last few years. 3 years or so. I can’t walk unless I’m holding a shopping cart or a walker. In the last six months the walking has gotten worse, I’ve gone to pretty much unable to walk, and the pain is off the charts.
So I saw a doctor in January who said I need a hip replacement, actually two. Wants to do it ASAP. But I need to loose 40 lbs ASAP. Actually he thinks it should be 50-55. So he wants me to get bariatric surgery. I don’t want that.
I went through 2 surgeries last year, now I got two more. Plus rehab. Ad to top it all, I found out I have some tertiary problems which are scaring the pants off me.
I know that G-d doesn’t put anything on our plate he doesn’t think we can’t handle, and I know people here have been through worse in their lives. I just am overwhelmed, scared out of my mind and in so much pain. And catless!
That’s the only thing keeping me from getting off the deep end. When all this is over and done, I will finally be able to have a kitty. And he/she will be be best loved kitteh in the whole world. Ok. In my family.
So that’s why I’m off line now. Pain and just overwhelm ness. Keep posting kitty pictures though. It makes me happy. Kitties books ad chocolate. The things that make life wonderful.
It’s in the rotation but I have two good translations as well.
Don’t anticipate softly crooning his words in French to anyone in the future... hmmmm or in the past either.
Some hipster/goth/undead pretender might buy it for carry around flaunting, gasping on her/his Gauloises while squinting and sneering simultaneously.
