Adele credits Sarah Palin for her success

Adele says Sarah Palin is directly responsible for her career as a singer.

Well, kind of.

Adele recounted on a BBC special Friday how the former Alaska governor and GOP candidate for vice president made an appearance on "Saturday Night Live" in October, 2008 during the height of the presidential campaign when Adele, then still relatively unknown, was the show's musical guest.

That was the episode where Palin and Tina Fey, playing Sarah Palin, famously acknowledged one another during the show's cold opening.

"It was one of the most watched SNLs ever and then it was two weeks before the Grammy ballot, which is when people decide what songs they want to maybe nominate, so, like, literally the stars aligned for me," she said. "The album shot to number one on iTunes and I was nominated for a Grammy and then I won one! It was a joke! It was a joke. All thanks to Sarah Palin!"

Upon hearing of Adele's story, Palin sent her a copy of her book "Sweet Freedom" with an inscription in which she said in part: "So ... rumor has it you recently threw me some credit for your amazing success -- very kind coming from someone like you."

Adele and Christina are genuine singers. Aguilera’s vocal range blows my mind

IMHO, acting goes before singing; acting goes before dance. Meaning that presentation is more than half of the performance. The best singers or dancers in the world, lacking stage presence, are not as entertaining as a good actor who is also a good singer or dancer. As an extreme example of what I mean check out the video below. Puddles' presentation is striking to say the least: he is graced with an unusually strong operatic voice, but many people are. What you'll remember him for, OTOH, is his mobile face and the acting ability to carry off the performance playing an absurd role to perfection. Halley Rehinhardt is a very competent singer too, but it's her acting ability that makes her stage presence remarkable.

I first learned of Adele right here on Free Republic when someone posted an article of her crabbing about the taxes she had to pay. There was a link to Rolling in the Deep, and I was instantly hooked. Bought her new album the day it came out a couple weeks ago, and just LOVE it. I love the bombast of her songs, and the big orchestration behind a lot of it.

Two song references, excellent.

Swift is a genius on several levels, in a supermodel’s package, and a legitimate literary figure.

“When you’re 15
And someone tells you they love you
You’re gonna believe3 it.”

I forgot when she wrote that, but she wrote the tune that went with the words.

You ask most 15 year olds how or what they are feeling and they don’t even know where to start. Swift explained so much in one line about why girls turn to the young men they turn to when they are young in a single line.

This line isn’t a fluke either, she’s got others.

I’m not saying everything she writes is Wordsworth, but she’s a rare combination of abilities with BUSINESS acumen way, way beyond her experience.

Adele seems to rather live her life privately compare to today’s “artist” who does the “O look at me” type.

Ahh, yes now that sounds like the kind of classy reply Sarah would say!

I completely missed the song title reference. Thanks for clarifying it for me. :)

You and 3.4 million other people.

Album sales for 25 have been just massive.

Almost as if Sarah was saying, bless your heart!

You mean as a way of implying something nasty and not coming out and saying it?

I doubt she'd be as much of a jerk as that.

Not exactly nasty but perhaps a bit derisive when I read, "someone like you" and me not getting the song reference.

It seemed out of character and thus generated my initial post.

“Rumor has it” is also an Adele song - doubly witty response!

Christina’s issue, from this humble commentator, is that she just doesn’t seem to have found her own thing. She clearly has the best voice of the crowd she came up with.

Adele writes her own material, and I saw her sing those big songs with nothing but an acoustic guitar accompaniment. And they sounded great.

“It was a joke! It was a joke. All thanks to Sarah Palin!”

I’m not sure Adele’s political viewpoints have changed. Although others have posted that all she does is make albums - so good. Shut up and sing!

I’d never heard her before seeing this video, but it’s easy to see why she’s been so successful!

It’s worth watching- they prove here that talent and skill are what make the product, not the best instruments.

Don’t mistake my comments as panegyric for Christina over Adele. Adele’s strength is the soul she puts into her music. Christina just has the gift of power in her voice. She needs better songwriters.
