Olympic figure skater Debi Thomas broke, living in trailer with bed bugs (Remember her from 1988?)

Debi Thomas, an Olympic figure skating bronze medalist, is broke and living in a bed bug-ridden trailer, according to an Oprah Winfrey Network show that aired Saturday night.

"I did the best I could," Thomas said, crying, in a sitdown interview (clips here). "I don't have a plan.

"When things aren't right, and you're doing the best you can, it can be really hard. I'm a kind of person who made goals from the time I was 5 years old, and then you get to that point in life, and you're like, this isn't what I was expecting, and I've got to go in a different direction."

Thomas, now 48, won the 1986 World Championship at age 18 and, in the "Battle of the Carmens," rivaled Katarina Witt going into the Calgary 1988 Winter Games.

Witt repeated as Olympic champion, while Thomas took bronze.

Thomas then graduated from Stanford with an engineering degree in 1991 and from Northwestern Medical School in 1997 and became an orthopedic surgeon.

Thomas said she was fired twice from doctor jobs and, according to the TV show, divorced twice.

Thomas, who lost custody of her son, moved to Virginia and into a trailer with her fiance and his two boys. She said that they’ve had domestic disputes that required police intervention.

I see Meryl Davis recently bought an old farmhouse in my neck of the woods that she’s restoring. If she’s smart she has real plans for the future beyond skating because her looks aren’t going to carry her.

Saw this story online last month.

Apparently she has a complaint against her medical license in Virginia plus a district court date last month.

Too bad but these sorts of things don’t just “happen.”

There is allot more to this story than we are getting. She must still have a license to practice medicine. Getting fired or laid off as an orthopedic surgeon is not terribly abnormal for the last several years as many practices have changed hands and sold out to health care companies and hospitals due to Obamacare.

That being said, even a fair Otrthapedic is in high demand at ANY hospital and they make between $350,000 and $600,000. The average Orthopedic Surgeon makes $525,000.

We are looking at a case of Prescription Drug abuse or real mental health issues.

I feel bad for them..been through job loss..divorce,etc..but your right make a statement and ask for help ..55 minutes is way too long.

I’ve been through alot but none of my experiences made me want to be a democrat or a liberal..it’s made me an ever stronger conservative.

FWIW... A Comment from her son

All of you are sick. I am her son and everything people here are saying is guessed and made up. No she is not on drugs, she doesn’t drink (gave it up a long time ago), and this was filmed a long time ago. She is doing better and a lot of the things that whoever decided to make this show says are not even true. By reading these comments on here, I think it’s going to make me throw up. The go fund me thing is not like it’s forcing you to give her money, it’s just another version of giving tithe to the poor at Church. She’ll be back. She’s one of the hardest working people I know. I also know that once she is back, she will help and support all of you if you are struggling despite how you treated her.

Prescription drug abuse. Very likely the case.

Opioid are prescribed left and right by orthopedists as bone injuries are among the most painful a person can get.

I’d be more sympathetic if he explained why, then, is she still doing so badly.

She was an MD, a practicing orthopedic surgeon, and now she is begging for handouts? What happened to her medical license?

Re: BEDBUGS

Get some “Cedarcide”

I travel a lot for work and never experienced them before until I managed to bring them home from a GOOD HOTEL (!!!) in new Jersey...

I remember seeing a bug on the wall at the hotel but I was half asleep and didn’t think much of it- although I was mildly curious that it did not look like a spider...

Three months later when I found them at my home I was furious... both at myself and the hotel.. and they are a PAIN IN THE ASS to get rid of!!!

I found a product called Cedarcide. It is just Cedar oil from cedar trees. Bugs don’t bother your clothes in a cedar chest for the same reason - they hate the stuff.

I bought the CedarCide and a $200 fogger machine. It is expensive at $100 a gallon, but worth every penny

I took everything out of the room, fogged it so it was a cloud you could not even see through, and then vacuumed/washed every item before putting it back and then fogged it again.

Totally GONE!

And I loved the cedar smell- so I use it once every few months in the whole house- keeps spiders and everything away

YUP!

Orthopedist to boot. Lots and lots of opiods prescribed in those practices. They buy Percocet and Vicodin by the truck load and hand them out like candy because of the pain involved in bone and tendon damage.

Real easy to get hooked for a doctor.

Not buying what her son is selling. If his mom is begging for money - which is what she is doing - when she has degrees from top schools...well, I think drugs are a reasonable guess. It sure wasn’t a lack of opportunity!
