Peter Attia: What if we're wrong about diabetes?
YouTube ^ | Jun 25, 2013 | Peter Attia; TED MED

Posted on 11/08/2015 10:45:25 AM PST by WhiskeyX

As a young ER doctor, Peter Attia felt contempt for a patient with diabetes. She was overweight, he thought, and thus responsible for the fact that she needed a foot amputation. But years later, Attia received an unpleasant medical surprise that led him to wonder: is our understanding of diabetes right? Could the precursors to diabetes cause obesity, and not the other way around? A look at how assumptions may be leading us to wage the wrong medical war.

” American obesity is strongly related to carbs and sugar.”

A more correct explanation ...

” American obesity is strongly related to PIGGING OUT ON carbs and sugar.

In Italy where pasta and bread are a religion you don’t see a tenth of the obesity you see here.

Here is some backup for your assertion:

Salt, We Misjudged You

Quantities and activity levels matter, and the Italians don’t look like the people of Walmart. The Italians also don’t have the same demographics we do.

I’m Italian and was raised on a diet with lots of bread and pasta. None of us are overweight. The way I see it, for some people carbs don’t affect them in any way. In others, they gain weight. People just need to figure out which type they are when they go about trying to lose weight. Everyone’s genetics and biology are different and are not affected by the same things in the same way. A one size fits all diet wouldn’t work on everyone.

Agree. But likely their bread and pasta is heavier whole grain.

I just got back from there, if anything people here are more conscious of whole grain than there.

They just eat less and walk more. Also there’s more of a stigma to being obese and they’re much more fashion conscious, and being obese or fat does nothing for your fashion.

This attitude in the medical profession has no place. It is the opposite of compassion and healing. Patients can feel the hate. It pisses me off because it assumes Mr. doctor is perfect and above his imperfect patients. If I were not a Christian, I would say “I hope Attia gets diabetes and a doctor who hates him for it.” But I won’t say that.

You should watch the entire video and then maybe you can have the mods remove your post.

I saw the video. It does not excuse his hate when he was of the mind of blame his patients prior to realizing the truth about diabetes.

What about a smoker with lung cancer. Does he hate and blame them for being sick?

I forgive him. He has turned around and sees the errors in his way and is making it right. Not only is he making it right, but he is going against the tide of conventional wisdom and fighting for the truth. I wish more people would do that.

I agree that he’s self corrected mind in the area of blaming his patients for diabetes.
