2,500-year-old Female Siberian Warrior Is Beheaded By Excavator
Siberian Times ^ | October 29, 2015 | Anna Liesowska

The excavator smashed the prehistoric ceremonial burial chamber in the Altai Mountains, wrecking the grave of a suspected the grave of a suspected 16 to 20 year old combatant from the colourful Pazyryk culture. Local culture heritage official Dr Vasily Oinoshev said: 'Only the human head and upper part of the horse remained intact in the burial ground.Unfortunately, the rest was destroyed by heavy machinery.

'Apparently, this was a young woman, judging by the teeth. All of them are intact and in good condition. We attribute her to Pazyryk culture, and we have preliminarily dated the burial as being 2,500 years old.'

There is evidence in the shattered grave that indicates the woman was a 'warlike' fighter, with a seemingly elite status in her society, a standing that intrigues archeologists after previous similar finds -- and has been linked by one noted scientist to descriptions from Greek physician Hippocrates about the Sarmatians, which, like the Pazyryks, were a Scythian grouping famed for their mastery of mounted warfare...

There was an embossed cheek piece made of antler -- part of the ancient bridle set. This was to obscure her horse's hind view, to allow it to race...

Dr Oinoshev, head of the Agency for Cultural and Historical Heritage in the Altai Republic, explained: 'The mound was 8 to 10 metres in diameter, the depth of the burial was 3.2 meters. There was also a wooden construction -- 2 x 2 metres. We presume that this was a rather wealthy girl, but that the burial chamber was robbed in ancient times.'

In other words, the grave would have had more valuable items in it -- as found in a handful of similar burials which remained intact -- but that these were stolen by ancient raiders.

Agreed. But today’s people, those that live very hard physically demanding/unrewarding lives tend to age very fast.

2500 years ago, after a long days work, you couldn’t just go out to McDonald’s cause you were too tired to cook.

I also have a feeling obesity was not an issue back then, and the girl had a terrific figure.

Oddly enough, I got thinking about some of my favorite LOTR passages, and hunted down a few for a file — including that passage — then checked the usual archaeological news sites and found this article. :’)

We only get half of our chromosomes from each parent, and each half is mixed and matched from each half they got from each of their parents, IOW, we have 46 lines, 23 from each side of the family (give or take consanguinous relationships). By the time one gets back to the 6th-great-grand, there are 64 names on the list, but at least 18 haven’t passed down any chromosomes (again, give or take...). They are, however, still the ancestors.

The taxidermist? chose to give her a very wide mouth. I don't believe there is any indication of mouth opening size left on bones so he made a guess in the widest percentile.

She reminds me of Jon Favreau in The Replacements.

Exactly right. But because we have an image that image is now the “truth”.

Two words: Sexual dimorphism.

It seems much more likely that a heart-broken father or lover buried those things with her than that she successfully engaged in hand to hand combat with men.

It’s much more likely that she died defending the settlement from a night-time raiding party. When the festivities started, everyone pitched in.

Actually, that people were apparently a Scythian people so she may have been the user.

The Scythians, one should remember, were the same bunch that, according to Herodotus, were seen as fit companions by refugee “Amazons” after their loss at the battle of Thermodon.

The people that came from the resulting intermarriage were the Sauromatae, steppe nomads who supposedly would not let a girl wed till she’d killed a man in battle.

Now, Herodotus’ claims not downplayed, had there been the Amazons and had they subsequently intermarried with Scythians it might indicate that the latter already had to have had a more equal view of women before said intermarriage, making it more palatable to the Amazons.

All conjecture, of course, but it still remains true that other Scythian groups besides the one in question have been found to have such warrior-women burials.

Sorry, but I regard that as mythology.

Women are simply not large and strong enough to function as a hoplite.

Interesting.

I wonder if the female artifacts found in the grave were, in fact, bridal gifts he was bringing to his intended when he died?

Archaeology is fascinating. You can utterly interpret the findings incorrectly because of your bias towards the culture of your upbringing, but without that cultural bias, you would not have any basis at all with which to interpret the findings.

I also wonder how examination of his teeth led to his initial identification as female. I didn’t realize that teeth show any particular level of sexual dimorphism.
