REI to remain closed on Black Friday, will pay employees
WCVB ^

"For 76 years we've been dedicated to getting people outside," a statement on the company's website said. "On Nov. 27 the co-op is closing all 143 stores so our employees can do just that."

The move comes as several retailers, including GameStop and Staples, announced they will remain closed on Thanksgiving, to allow employees time to be with their families.

I think this is a good idea, as long as it voluntary. I think they are realizing that it is worth it any more to stay open around thanksgiving.

One of my all-time favorite stores. Definitely a place I would have considered trekking to over the Thanksgiving holidays, but good for them for giving their employees a paid day off to spend with their families (or whatever).

REI can be open. REI can be closed.
Whatever they choose to do of their own volition that day is fine.
It is hands-down one of my very favorite retailers.

I don’t shop on “black Friday” anyway. I like their style though. Think I’ll make a point of getting outside that day and doing something fun. Maybe I’ll run to the local REI the weekend before and pick up some new small piece of gear and then go try it out.

A favorite store of mine.
This is a win-win for employee and employer alike.
Great corporate social responsibility PR, too.

A great store. Been perusing their catalogs for about 40 years, thrilled to now have one within lunchtime walking distance of work.
And glad to hear about them closing on Black Friday. I’ve given up on the day as well.

We go watch the horses race at Churchill Downs. We sit in a clubroom that has a nice buffet lunch, in seats that are many $thousands on Derby Day, for $25 or so. It is a great way to avoid the shopping insanity that is Black Friday.

These days, it’s easier to shop online. Or not shop at all.

“Lloyd and Mary Anderson founded REI in Seattle, Washington in 1938.” I started going to REI in Berkeley in 1985. The Berkeley store is still clean and friendly. The co-workers know their stuff and take pride in their equipment.

Thanksgiving was created by George Washington to give thanks to the Lord for victory over the British and for the assistance from France. Black Friday is boring and Thanksgiving is family time. Amazon deals are every day. I use REI for big purchases (bike, back pack) to get advice.

Yawn, ploy for free advertising. Otherwise, who cares. I sure do not. (And workers working Friday, big deal. If they do not like it, they can quit and find a new job.)

...It is hands-down one of my very favorite retailers.

About 10 years ago I went into an REI in the SF Bay Area looking for a jacket to wear while hunting. You would have thought I had suggested turning a church into a brothel.

Try Cabela's for outdoor gear.

My favorite outdoor stores all have a firearms section.

REI is a company that (1) chooses to open or close, (2) people choose to work for the company with whatever conditions that the company chooses, else they quit and work elsewhere. That REI opts to close on Friday is their choice, I’m disappointed actually (not for the Black Friday deals, but for one less shopping choice on Friday). I’ll just have to shop elsewhere. I think this hype over closing for the employees is reverting back to Blue Laws or whatever they were called when companies could not open on certain days or hours. Let companies open whenever they think it is in their interest. Again, if someone doesn’t like being scheduled to work on a particular day can always quit and find work elsewhere.

That’s fine, though a short time ago folks here were riled up because some manager screamed at and kicked out a mom who complained about a “transgendered” man using the ladies restroom her girl was in.

My style is not to be so single-channel about things.
You went to the WRONG store to buy hunting gear.
REI has much better stuff for downhill skiing, for example.

I was in a Cabela's asking about an Aimpoint red-dot scope.
The rifle optics salesperson seriously asked if they were made by Burris or Trijicon.
He was shocked to learn they are their own company.

My son and grandsons get four gifts each: Something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read. We shop all year long for Christmas gifts and spread our expense out. Find some interesting things for gifts which we happen onto, generally at small stores in small cities, when traveling. Need to add some cash for them to buy the “something they want”, bake home made cookies for all the business clients, decorate the house and it’s done. The thought of shopping in stores filled with Chinese merchandise with the thundering herds the day after Thanksgiving is just not on my bucket list.

Does seem to me like some time ago FR people were suggesting we boycott REI. Can’t remember the reason. Did I dream that?

For what it’s worth, the woman claimed it was a man in the bathroom, not a “transgendered man” (was not dressed as woman, etc.). REI issued a statement saying that they had reviewed video from the store in question, and there was no evidence that a man had entered the bathroom. Also, they said that she was not asked to leave the store.

Thank you for that. I’ll be showing that to my Wife before she starts her Christmas Shopping for all the Kids in the Family.
