One of my all-time favorite stores. Definitely a place I would have considered trekking to over the Thanksgiving holidays, but good for them for giving their employees a paid day off to spend with their families (or whatever).
yeah, i’m gonna wait hours in the cold (possibly) for a sale i might not get and hope i dont get into a fistfight (not impossible) or get trampled by a mob of mostly crazy lunatics (no offense to any FReepers who do it)
I don’t shop on “black Friday” anyway. I like their style though. Think I’ll make a point of getting outside that day and doing something fun. Maybe I’ll run to the local REI the weekend before and pick up some new small piece of gear and then go try it out.
A favorite store of mine.
This is a win-win for employee and employer alike.
Great corporate social responsibility PR, too.
A great store. Been perusing their catalogs for about 40 years, thrilled to now have one within lunchtime walking distance of work.
And glad to hear about them closing on Black Friday. I’ve given up on the day as well.
These days, it’s easier to shop online. Or not shop at all.
“Lloyd and Mary Anderson founded REI in Seattle, Washington in 1938.” I started going to REI in Berkeley in 1985. The Berkeley store is still clean and friendly. The co-workers know their stuff and take pride in their equipment.
Thanksgiving was created by George Washington to give thanks to the Lord for victory over the British and for the assistance from France. Black Friday is boring and Thanksgiving is family time. Amazon deals are every day. I use REI for big purchases (bike, back pack) to get advice.
Yawn, ploy for free advertising. Otherwise, who cares. I sure do not. (And workers working Friday, big deal. If they do not like it, they can quit and find a new job.)
That’s fine, though a short time ago folks here were riled up because some manager screamed at and kicked out a mom who complained about a “transgendered” man using the ladies restroom her girl was in.
And I think that is why some B&M stores are starting to close on BF. No need when more and more people are going online for things.
I think in this day and age of bad employees, they are trying to keep their good ones, because the increased productivity and happiness of the employees makes the shopping experience better for their customers which means better sales all year long. One pissed off employee can cost years worth of sales.
I support the company making a decision without government interference and to celebrate a national holiday. I’m sure the employees appreciate this gesture.
