HOUSTON (AP) — A white Houston-area man was sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison for committing a hate crime when he surprise punched an elderly black man.
In federal court in Houston on Friday, Conrad Alvin Barrett was sentenced to prison followed by three years of probation.
Barrett admitted in court to racial motivation in the Nov. 24, 2013, attack on his 81-year-old victim. Evidence showed Barrett filmed the attack on his cellphone. The 29-year-old Katy, Texas, man punched an 81-year-old man with such force that he fell to the ground. Barrett then laughed and said, “Knockout!” as he ran to his vehicle and fled.
The victim was hospitalized for several days for treatment of two jaw fractures.

While I agree with you, why isn't it a hate crime when a Black thug does the same to a White, Asian or Hispanic?
The culprit probably rationalized that his action was justified in retaliation for the “Knockout Game” perpetrated by some blacks against innocent whites and others. Of course it was not.
This sounds like a man bites dog story since nearly every video I’ve seen on the internet of a thug hitting an older person has a young black person hitting an older person, usually white.
A 29 year old punching out an 81 year old?
The 29 year old should be in prison until he is 81.
But black on white hate crime is a no nevermind because you know, white privilege.
How is this a federal crime? In this city, the reverse situation doesn’t even warrant press or prosecution.
I agree that his thuggish attack is criminal and uncivil and he deserves a lengthy (years) imprisonment for his crime, but how does this rise to the federal level with no borders being crossed? Wire(less) transfer of the video of the attack?
This racist government has not prosecuting the other knockout game attacks as federal criminals.
I don’t agree with hate crime enhancements, but this crime screams for more than six years.
Knockout game perps usually are sentenced to probation on up to about 6 years.
Fatal knockout game convictions lead to sentencing of about 10 years to life.
Should not be a federal crime.
It will be plenty of time spent avoiding the blak gangs in prison.
Notice that the case was tried in a county court and not a federal court.

If a black guy did it to a white guy, but yelled “Worldstar Hip Hop!” instead, there wouldn’t be any hate crime charges.
If it was a black man doing it to a white woman, he would have gotten 18 months.
Young on old. No excuse. Lock him away. Throw away the key.

In South Carolina, a racial attack, regardless of race, gets you 10 to 30 years in state prison. And you win the death penalty if the victim dies. That’s why one rarely hears of racist attacks in SC in these times.
These South Carolina boys are pretty serious about promoting racial harmony in the state. Race relations in SC, IMO, are much more harmonious and respectful than in many northern states.
The Knockout Game only works the other way.
