Trump wins again.
Fox News Chairman & CEO Roger Ailes and Donald Trump spoke this morning and plan to have a meeting next week to discuss their differences of opinion regarding Foxs coverage of Mr. Trumps presidential campaign. Ailes will be joined by senior Fox editorial executives.
Mr. Trump believes he has been treated unfairly in certain instances. FOX News has held every candidate in this race to the highest journalistic standards throughout our coverage. We believe a candid meeting about our differences is required and that any misunderstandings can be handled without compromising those standards
The assumption on Twitter is that it was Ailes who caved to Trump and begged him for the meeting, not vice versa. Thats my assumption too. Partly its a matter of Trumps no apologies persona: You cant imagine him groveling to any media platform for airtime, especially when competitors are happy to turn over half-hour blocs of their morning programming to him to ramble on the air about whatever. Partly its the fact that Fox felt obliged to put out this press release at all. Any other candidate who whined about boycotting the network would probably either be ignored or would have a private phone chat with Ailes that you and I would never know about.
As it is, Fox wants to make sure all the Trump fans out there know that theyre going to give him a respectful hearing despite the fact that he continues to publicly describe their brightest new star as an overrated lightweight who might have been bleeding out of some unspecified hole when she asked him tough questions at the debate. Clearly theyre worried enough about alienating his supporters that theyre willing to give him endless second chances no matter how many hard shots he takes at Fox on social media or on other cable news channels.
On the other hand: If its Fox thats instigating this meeting, why didnt they propose it yesterday in that press release announcing that they had canceled Trumps appearance on OReillys show tonight? That would have been the perfect time to say, We need a summit to discuss our differences. The fact that the meeting only came up today would fit with a timeline in which Fox dumps Trump, Trump quietly panics overnight, then calls up Ailes this morning to see if they can work something out.
Then again, it would also fit with a timeline in which Fox dumps Trump, Ailes sees MSNBC and CNN give huge chunks of exposure to Trump this morning, and suddenly Ailes decides that he doesnt want to cede Trumpmania to the competition entirely. (The fact that Trump made sure to appear on the two other cable news nets this morning was a smart way to create more leverage with Fox.) So he picks up the phone and begs Trump for a meeting.
Note too that Fox doesnt claim in todays press release that Trump asked them for a meeting, only that Ailes and Trump agreed it should happen. Is that because Trump asked for it and Fox didnt want to piss him off by mentioning that, or is it because Ailes asked for it and Fox didnt want to admit it?
Here he is on CNN this morning talking with Alisyn Camerota on topics various and sundry for nearly half an hour. After he was done with this, Scarborough gave him another 17 minutes on Morning Joe. Forty-three minutes of airtime on cable news is what the average presidential candidate gets over a few good weeks, Id guess. Your move, Fox.
Who has more to gain or more to lose?
The saddest thing is that Obama had just received a postcard from one of the departed revelers, which read, “Wish you were here!”
“Who has more to gain or more to lose?”
If Trump bails from the next FOX Debate over his, FOX will lose MILLIONS from the poor ratings.
For reference:
Herbert Bayard Swope Sr. (January 5, 1882 June 20, 1958) was a U.S. editor, journalist and intimate of the Algonquin Round Table. He spent most of his career at the New York World newspaper; three-time recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Reporting.
I imagine this conversation goes something like this: “If you ever set me up with another ambush, brag publicly about how you have a plan to take care of me in case I go crazy, and then ask inflamatory questions implying I am racist, sexist, whatever-ist, then I will burn your network to the ground. Got it? Ask fair policy related questions or it’s curtains for you.”
Trump is the King of Twitter. He could just sit back for the rest of the election cycle and stay on all other networks and then trash Fox on Twitter everyday. That and fail to appear for the next Fox debate.
On Monday, before Donald Trump declared his boycott against Fox News and asked his followers to join him, Fox News’s prime-time ratings were 2.210 million.
Wednesday, after the boycott went into effect, Fox News’s ratings were 2.416 million — a pickup of more than 200,000 viewers.
Maybe Roger Ailes just wants Donald Trump to keep saying bad things about Fox so that its viewership will continue to increase.
There is absolutely no question that Fox has disrespected Trump non stop. The worst may be Steve Hayes, George Will, Charles Krauthammer night after night after night, equally bad is Kelly
They should put clips together to view at this meeting, its unjournalistic unbalanced and unfair coverage.
Bret Baer mentioning the Fox Poll last night, he seemed unhappy about saying Trump had gained 1 point (so they claim, probably higher)
On the CNN poll they were going with non stop, they never at any point said, hey wait a minute this is out of line with the CNN poll we ran with, Fox poll still has Carson in 2nd, Carly is not as high up as cnn said either.
On the Fox poll yesterday, by the time they got to the Kelly File the new headline for their poll was Trump stalled or stuck at whatever the number was, nothing about how he is significantly higher than the CNN poll they were trumpeting, and Carly was in 3rd place alone, no mention of that only that she was surging.
Trump is exactly right, Fox is treating Trump like the rest of the media treated Sarah Palin. Fox trashed her quite a bit as well including Kelly
That was a bump. My sister wants nothing to do with Fox but tuned in the next day to see what they would say about the boycott.
Ailes’ brainfreeze thawed and he realized with Trump comes some 18 million more viewers. He won’t get anywhere near that number for the next debate if they diss Trump.
Again, Trump has the upper hand — as long as he pulls in the large numbers.
Imagine a next FoxNews debate, sans Trump, and only 3 million viewers.
The old man left control of Fox to one son and the other advises him. Interesting is fact the son has given millions to the Clintons. I seem to recall reading this just prior to the first debate. No one can convince me that the 1st debate was not a planned hit job on Trump. Baer, Chris Wallace and Kelly showed there ass. Fox has clearly been pimping for Fiorina. To think I dumped Dish to get Fox back on ATT. The price is more and Fox sux now.
Another SCORE for Trump!
If Fox fires Kelly and maybe others, the Trump back. Else, Trump should make a point of interviewing daily on whatever programs run opposite hers.
Ailes probably figures that it’s about time to recognize that Trump is the front runner and FOX needs to stop sniping with Democrat talking points.
They won’t fire Kelly. Everyone just needs to stop watching her. I agree that Trump needs to interview constantly on other networks. I wish OANN were more readily available.
Imagine at the next Fox debate, Trump counter-programs his own event on another network LOLOLOLOLOLOL
