The cubs fathered by Cecil the lion are being protected by his brother amid fears they will be killed by a male rival, researchers said today.
The much-loved lion was killed by American dentist Walter Palmer earlier this month, sparking outrage around the world.
After his death, there were fears his cubs would be killed by the next lion in the hierarchy so he could father his own offspring with the females in the pride.
But a team at Oxford University's Wildlife Conservation Unit, which had been studying Cecil before he was shot dead, said the lion's brother had stepped in to safeguard the young.

“Actually it is. Lions aren’t people and don’t really care about your fixation with feminism.”
If you want to live in a fantasy world that’s your business, but you shouldn’t spread MISSinformation.

The family life of lions fascinates me. And the way the females hunt is amazing to watch...perfectly synched, with both or all of the lionesses’ actions working together toward the common goal. They will chase the target animal right into the lionesses waiting in ambush.
I’ve been an animal lover all my life and, yes, I also have a special soft spot for big cats. Anyone who thinks that’s somehow not compatible with conservatism or expects me to apologize/justify it can jump in a lake.

"Dont you have any love for the target animal???" I do. But they're much more plentiful.

Interesting. I had always assumed that male lions would killed baby lions like feral tom cats will. I saw this happen in my own back yard when I was a child .

Animals don’t “murder.” They kill to feed themselves and their young. Trying to humanize them is foolish.
Have you ever seen the size of a wildebeest herd? It’s also silly to think cats could hunt them out of existence.

The much-loved lion, seriously, how many people actually loved this lion?
It it was a much loved wildebeest, crickets...
The Zimbabweans didn't even know or care about Cecil...to them he's just another lion...
Lions are magnificent creatures, but at the end of the day, they are animals...
Cecil would up as someone's dinner in the local village

What they mean is the "much loved money-maker"...or didn't anyone notice the bucks for the hunt.....and that's without knowing the outcome.
IIRC, the US is working on denying entry to "trophies".

There are indeed some cases of sibling care in wild animals, where the adult male sibs were genetically very close and so Cecil's cubs share a good percentage of his brother's genes.
But if it turns out that Cecil's brother lion kills the cubs after all:
- Will the breathless press report it?
- Will the brother lion instantly turn from being savior to devil?
- Will Mia Farrow tweet the brother lion's GPS coordinates, as she did the dentist's family home address?
- Will the bloggers rush to use the tired phrase "Nature red in tooth and claw"?
- Will anyone mention the thousands of other animals poached and killed for sport or profit every year, including endangered species?
DRINK! (oh wait, wrong thread)

I Just find it amazing people who knew absolutely nothing about this lion or even how big game hunts operate, now are in tears, beating their chests in grief, outraged, perplexed, demanding "something' (whatever that means) be done about it...
If Cecil was killed by another lion or another animal, this story would be literally non-existent...
But because he was killed by a "evil" human being who paid to hunt big game, it's beyond the pale...
Even our house of idiots: feckless, craven, gutless, spineless Congress is in on the action...
I mean there is nothing else that's important going on to address...!!!

Sort of reminiscent of one hand of OUR Government can’t find a few million illegals in this country but can track a dead calfs parentage back to a Rogue Cow in Canada.
This definitely is a ‘feel good’ tale meant to sidetrack the minds full of mush that HRC and NYC are going down quicker than the freelance CS’ers at a LBQTXYMLSZP**#$^@^TG parade.
Maybe we can get these researchers on the missing Libs - BO in particular - ‘paper’ work from an earlier day.
