The cubs fathered by Cecil the lion are being protected by his brother amid fears they will be killed by a male rival, researchers said today.
The much-loved lion was killed by American dentist Walter Palmer earlier this month, sparking outrage around the world.
After his death, there were fears his cubs would be killed by the next lion in the hierarchy so he could father his own offspring with the females in the pride.
But a team at Oxford University's Wildlife Conservation Unit, which had been studying Cecil before he was shot dead, said the lion's brother had stepped in to safeguard the young.

Only a suggestion....but could we convince the lion-name guys in Africa to use “Ronald Reagan” and “Thomas Jefferson” in the future....so people get sympathetic about republicans as they shoot the lions?
Lions aren’t humans. That lion is waiting for the opportunity to eat those cubs.

I feel we have to give the left an even bigger feel good .moment in the story about Cecil.
I heard Jack Hanna on TV last night talking about this. What he said was it was possible that at least some of the cubs that Cecil’s “brother” is protecting could have been fathered by him and not Cecil or that even if the paternity is in question, even those cubs having been fathered by Cecil, that Cecil’s brother would recognize the cubs as being more closely genetically related to him (I’m guessing by scent or appearance?) than to the other male lions in the pride who want to take it over and hence have a biological instinct to protect the bloodline. I thought that was interesting.

I have a soft spot in my heart for big cats. Well and little cats too.
While i don’t agree with personally with killing top level predators out of professional courtesy (we humans are top level predators too ya know) if it can be helped. I would gun down a lion if it was comming for me.
If the hunting of lions is being done to keep populations in check and the money the rich guys pay to shoot the is being used to benefit the lions then i wont complain. I just won’t be gunning for lions unless one is comming for me.
My first thought, the cubs simply haven’t been killed yet.
Besides, females rule the pride and males generally don’t get too close.
Cue the soaring violins, cue the Disney logo, fade out.
I guess not everyone saw “The Lion King”. Those cubs (at least the boys) better enjoy it now. And the following article seems to agree with Hanna (”lions can’t be stepfathers” last paragraph).
