Suddenly, space is getting interesting again. After decades of going boldly nowhere in low Earth orbit, Man, or rather his robotic emissaries, have made some startling discoveries in our Solar System.
Cold, distant Pluto is who would have thought it? turning out to be one of the most interesting planets (yes, it is a planet) in the Solar System. Before the New Horizons probe turned up earlier this month, astronomers assumed it would be a dull, grey cratered rock.

If we find life of any kind out there whether it be Martian microbes (we have several probes prodding the Martian surface and observing it from orbit) or a signal from super-intelligent (or even mildly brainy) aliens it will change everything. ET will force us to confront a deep truth; that humans are not the only game in town, that we live in a possibly crowded (and quite probably threatening) universe.
But heres the thing. What if they dont find anything? What if, 10 years, a 100 years, a 1,000 years hence, endless sky-surveys, proddings and pokings of Mars and elsewhere, turn up nothing, save rocks, gas, ice and vacuum. We had better be prepared for this because, I am beginning to believe, this seems to be the most likely result.
ET should be out there. As the physicist Enrico Fermi famously pointed out more than 60 years ago, in a universe of great antiquity and size such as ours, there ought to be many, many civilisations in space, some of which will be far in advance of our own. It is, he said, a paradox that we have not seen any evidence of this.

A thought - the “alien life must be out there, I’m sure of it” meme is a 21st Century substitute for the religious belief of previous eras.
Exactly.
We have found complex organic compounds formed naturally throughout the solar system. From this people take the leap that life must also be common.
We can also create complex organic compounds from base elements in a laboratory. But no one has ever figured out how to turn the most complex organic compounds into even the simplest form of living microbial life.
That jump required either an intelligence far greater than ours or trillions upon trillions of random occurrences that we cannot yet figure out.
Then who built the canals and sculpted the face????? ............................ Had you grown up in the 40’s or 50’s, you would know it was the Clay People.
There will still be some back woods redneck claiming he was abducted and probed by aliens.........
One of the great fallacies brought to us by the movie Contact is that if there is no other life out there, the universe is a big waste of space. A lot of people have grabbed onto that single statement from a fictional movie (much like “If you build it, they will come) and accepted that there is a truth to it. The size of the universe, number of galaxies, number of stars in those galaxies and the number of possible planets surrounding those stars does not automatically imply there has to be other life. Sure, we are given mathematical probabilities as proof, but until other life is found, the math really doesn’t work.
There will still be some back woods redneck claiming he was abducted and probed by aliens.........
Just because YOU weren’t abducted and probed doesn’t
mean it hasn’t happened. Any way you probably were
but the conditioning took and you just remember a
bad case of roides.
THAT is what I was looking for.
Googling found a pattern of “DMCA takedown” debris.
Awright, time to watch Watchmen again this weekend.
We’ve only been studying the issue for a few decades. Making pretty good progress on it, actually...
There is no Life on Mars, but they have Scrabble.
“But the cold revelation that our small planet may be the most important thing in the entire universe, and our existence almost impossibly lonely, may be something we find very hard to face up to.”
He’s saying he would have to admit there is a God.
You know too much.....It was YOU wasn't it? I suspected it all along.
Life, even with all the right ingredients present in the proper environment (which has never existed on any other planet in our solar system), doesn't just assemble. Yet within ten million years of the end of the Late Heavy Bombardment 3.85 billion years ago (that is, within a very brief time after the Earth had cooled), we have solid evidence of an abundance of complex life here on Earth. Obviously, then, God created it miraculously. Whether He has also done so elsewhere will remain a mystery to us until He tells us, if He ever does.
“Hes saying he would have to admit there is a God.”
He would rather die than do that. (...and some day he will)
