Not content with having the best whisky in the world, Suntory Holdings Ltd. plans to take its whisky out of this world and into space.
The Japanese brewing and distilling company said this week it would send a total of six samples of its whiskies and other alcoholic beverages to the International Space Station, where they will be kept for at least a year to study the effect zero gravity has on aging.
According to a spokesman at the company, the samples, which will be carried in glass flasks, will include both a 21-year-old single malt and a beverage that has just been distilled. Research has shown that whisky aged in an environment with little temperature change, convection of fluids and shaking tends to be become mellower, he said.
The company hopes to learn how the ultimate zero gravity environment affects the taste of their products, he added.

Bottles of Suntorys Hibiki and Yamazaki brand whiskies
Pretty sure whiskey does not age in glass bottles, or flasks.
They just want to study the effects of microgravity on the taste, so they eliminate that variable.................
And the first astronauts only had Tang to look forward to! :-)
“Pretty sure whiskey does not age in glass bottles, or flasks.”
Yep, they should have used white oak barrels (small barrels).
Suntory taste like what pass through Glorious Russian Space Pioneer Laika. Why you tink it so yellow, hmm?
Hokay, hokay...but who is owning Red’s Red Dog company... hmmm?
well played;>)
They also own Jim Beam, and Maker’s Mark.
I cant imagine zero G would allow for much flavor transfer from an oak barrel. It would seem gravity would be necessary for the liquid to remain in contact with the charred wood.
JMHO
Yamazaki is AMAZING!
Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 was named the best scotch of 2015. I’ve been trying to find some here.
I know - I was able to sample in Japan on a biz trip last year - they were surprised I knew about it. I couldn’t believe how good it was, but it was just the one little sample - expensive - phew - it was in such high demand they said they couldn’t keep it in. the other Yamazaki’s give any scotch a run for their money unless you talk super high end - but my god that was a good mellow swallow.
I’m trying a new one I’d never seen before called Monkey’s shoulder today. Hint of vanilla, it’s a nice change of pace... but no Yama. When I go lower on price i either go Irish with Jameson’s or Rye with Templeton Rye. Love me some Templeton.
