Apple IIgs System 6.0.2 Update Rolls Out After 22 Years - No Kidding LINK

Only 22 years after its last update Apple IIgs System 6.0.1 is getting a new update. The version 6.0.2 update added support for Apple's Ethernet for Appletalk card, fixed an HFS bug that could lead to file corruption, fixed PASCL.FST and DOS33.FST bugs, addressed bugs in TextEdit, Font Manager, and Window Manager, and the list goes on. What makes this so cool is that it's Apple IIgs fans who created the update. The IIgs was a great cross-over machine in its time because it also supported Apple IIe software and offered multimedia support you couldn't find on other computers. Thanks to A.P.P.L.E, you can break out your dusty old IIgs and give it a spiffy OS update. It's a free download at the A.P.P.L.E. website.

Check it out.

I had one of those with a 4 meg Ram Disk on a PCI card, talk about quick. I liked the II GS GUI much more than the Mac back in the day, I even had a GUI for the Apple II.

I had 4 or five GS's a few years back but gave the all away when I had to make a move. Such is life. I still have a 15 inch G4 PowerBook that works and a G4 Mac Mini running OS 9 Classic under OS X 10.4.

Apple got big with their open architecture, then they promptly went to the Mac and closed it. That’s when I ceased to be a fan.

My first computer was a used Apple //e, 128 kbytes of RAM, two 140kB disk drives, black & white monitor, joystick, 150 programs for $3500 in 1982. Ten years before, a comparable system would have cost 10-20X and wouldn’t have been nearly as user friendly — no VisiCalc, no DbaseII, no integrated Dbase/VisiCalc/WordProcessor (can’t remember the name), and no games.

This is weird that Apple is updating such an old platform. Why bother?

Apple open sourced GSOS quite a while ago, this update is being done by a group that’s taken over software updating.

As for why bother - there are a shocking amount of IIgs still sitting in musicians computer/amp stacks. They’re still one of the better MIDI controllers out there, among other things.

//GS -- the most purely enjoyable programming platform[s] I ever owned!!

I still have two complete systems:

Looks like I should download this new OS rev, drag out the "toys"-- and "play" a bit...

Now -- what do I have on hand for burning a floppy for "feeding" the OS rev to the Gs...?

I also have a couple IIGS machines, one a "Woz" special and the other a later model. In addition, I have a IIe converted to a IIGS - it's a IIGS motherboard in a IIe case with a modified backplane and base.

As for feeding the machine, I have successfully downloaded files using the audio tape input port on my Apple II machines. There are some Apple sites that allow you to feed the audio output of your Mac or iPad directly into the Apple II tape port. Weird, but it works.

An easier solution is to obtain a USB/CompactFlash card (they run about $150 for a CFFA3000 from dreher.net) to stick in the IIGS. Download files to any USB stick on your Mac, then insert the USB stick in the IIGS and don't bother with floppies.

I still have a mac that runs OS 8. I love the look, and feel of it. I play games on it, and cherish it like an old family member.

There’s something about those old macs. Like old classic cars. Still wonderful.

Thanks Swordmaker! The TCP/IP extension previously available now for some 10 to 15 years was third party, I'll be surprised, make that shocked, iff this update isn't also third party. Due to the processor speed (and modern graphic file sizes and densities) web browsing wasn't all one might wish. Lynx still works, but an all-text interface is, again, not all one might wish.

I was in college when Apple introduced the IIgs.

The Apple rep had a display of one in the student union.

I wanted one so bad I could taste it, but it was light years out of what I could afford.

Apple isn't. A.P.P.L.E. is. It's kind of like the community-supported upgrades out there for OS/2 and Amiga.

Wots the latest on that crappy $300 watch. You know the Asians are bailing on it and the gays rather spend it on porn.
