Apple Backtracks, Reinstates Some Apps Using Confederate Symbols

Apple pulled all apps from the App Store with Confederate symbols such as the Battle Flag of the Confederacy Friday morning. Almost immediately, though, the company began backtracking by working with developers to reinstate apps that use such symbols for "educational or historical uses."

Ultimate General: Gettysburg

There has been a massive wave against those symbols throughout the U.S. in the aftermath of a racist terrorist attack in South Carolina that left nine people shot by a white supremacist. Apple CEO Tim Cook urged Americans to remove symbols of racism in a tweet many interpreted to be aimed at the Battle Flag of the Confederacy, in particular. Salesforce.com CEO Mark Benioff was another powerful tech executive who urged the same thing.

There was soon a tsunami of such sentiments as politicians on the left and the right made similar calls, and then retailers—including giants like Amazon, Walmart, Ebay, Google Shopping, and even Etsy—made the decision to pull such merchandise.

In that context. Apple was merely one more retailer to pull such products, but the App Store is a bit different from most retailers. In particular, the App Store has war games, educational apps, and history apps with confederate symbology where usage is not intended to propagate racist idealogy. Fortunately, the company was quick to recognize that, and it issued the following statement:

We have removed apps from the App Store that use the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which is in violation of our guidelines. We are not removing apps that display the Confederate flag for educational or historical uses.

The company told TechCrunch that it is working with developers to quickly get apps that fall under that "educational or historical" umbrella reinstated. Games such as Ultimate General: Gettysburg, a war game, have not yet been reinstated as of this writing.

Apple should have stayed out of this. I have many thousands of dollars invested in Apple products....I love the stuff, the service has been incredible and the products work..... but I am done.

I have no idea what I will replace our Apple products with, but this homo-Tim Cook has pissed me off. I want nothing to do with him or anything about him or is products.

Kinda hard to have to have anything related to the War Between the States without acknowledging the Confederacy.

I chose to buy a Samsung Galaxy S6 today instead of an iphone.

Idiots.

If everyone cuts back just a few Apple purchases, it affects the bottom line.

With Amazon, it's easier to stop buying from them. I really have no interest in having any dealings anymore with a company that started out as a bookseller and now practices censorship.

***There has been a massive wave against those symbols throughout the U.S.***

Nonsense. It is always the same Leftist malcontents that scream knowing the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
We’ve already seen this in calls to destroy the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and bulldoze Confederate grave sites.

They will rename parks, schools, remove memorials, dig up confederate graves like the ghouls they are and other stuff... much of this will not be back.

The Cultural Revolution has only begun

Well, at some point, the south will have to defend its heritage I guess. Maybe the next election would be a good place to start.

It was totally stupid and a knee-jerk, PC reaction for Apple to pull any of its Civil War game apps, not to mention cowardly.

Like you I have a lot of Apple products I like a lot, but I’m thinking about changing them out.

Although there is a chance the Feds may have said threatened them, just like Amazon, to stir things up.

Just in time for Jade Helm right?

I know Tim Cook is originally from Alabama. I hope he is not THAT STUPID to have done this on his own.

Again like you I enjoy Apple products. I would sure hate getting rid of them.

Congratulations. I don't own Apple stock, but I had (emphasis: HAD) multiple Apple iPads and a MacBook.

All were wiped clean and sold. I've replaced my iPads with Android Tablets (which are AWESOME and far better than my iPads ever were...) and my MacBook with a Surface Pro 3.

I pushed my documents that I need accessible to my Droid Tablet and my Surface Pro 3 to a Cloud Service that supports both these platforms and I haven't missed a beat.

I refuse to support a company that actively works against my own interests and shoves gay policy down America's throat.

I hope Tim Cook and Apple both burn in hell.

Dude - it starts with you. Cancel any insurance you have from a company based out of the North East. I switched to USAA and know my dollars are not going to some Yankee snob who votes for Senators that aren’t in my best interest.

If 20% of the folks in the south did that, it would get some attention

Man, Sword, it's been a tough week.

That's all I got to say.

Hope next week is better.
