You were there to watch Secretariat win the Triple Crown ?
Wow
Greatest Race horse of all time.
He still holds the track records at the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont.

At the Derby.
I used to go every year.
My maternal grandfather used to have horses, until his stable burned up, with the horses in it. He never got another horse.
That Belmont run, though.
That would have been something to remember. It's worth wandering through the Kentucky bluegrass. I remember driving down one of those white picket fence driveways, with young fillies on one side and colts on the other. They were bunched up and talking and prancing around, looking at each other.
Gosh, that was a long time ago now.
Glad for this horse, American Pharaoh. It's a nice thing to think about.

Here's how AP's winning time of 2:26:65 stacks up against history...
Pretty darn good I must say, although Hall of Fame jockey, Jerry Bailey, did note before the race that the track was especially fast today.

"That horse had an abnormally large heart, if memory serves." It did...and so did Sham who most likely would have won the '73 triple crown had it not been for Secretariat. IIRC, the original use of the term, "X factor" was for the oversize heart of a racehorse, and is believed to be a recessive trait in thoroughbreds that can lead to a healthy heart being 2X (or even more) larger than a "normal" horse heart.

Secretariat was 2:24, not 2:26. Fastest 1 1/2 mile time in history .. anywhere.

Yes, I was corrected on that.
Secretariot was the greatest race horse of all time.

I was never much of a horse racing fan after what happened to Ruffian .
To: tx_eggman
Am not a race follower, but I noticed faster times in 1893 and 1894. Did they change the race?

Every now and then (and basically annually, ahead of the Derby) I do enjoy watching all three of those 1973 races. :’)
