Marty is a 1953 teleplay by Paddy Chayefsky. It was telecast live May 24, 1953, on The Philco Television Playhouse with Rod Steiger in the title role and Nancy Marchand, in her television debut, playing opposite him as Clara. Chayefsky's story of a decent, hard-working Bronx butcher, pining for the company of a woman in his life but despairing of ever finding true love in a relationship, was produced by Fred Coe with associate producer Gordon Duff.
Was remade into a theatrical movie starring Ernest Borgnine

Borgnine was excellent in the movie and it made him a star.
Ernest Borgnine played “Marty’’, not Rod Steiger.
Didn’t know Marty was originally a tv production. I can definitely see Steiger in the role, though. Steiger was a phenomenal actor.
Loved the Borgnine movie, too. Frank Sutton (Sgt. Carter from Gomer Pyle) has a decent-sized part as one of Marty’s friends.
As far as Paddy Chayefsky goes, I think he must be looking down from Heaven, laughing and saying “I told you so!” Everything he predicted in Network has come to pass in media circles, and then some.
I liked it but didn’t think It was an Oscar winner. But that’s just me. but I remember those nights at the club as I got older thinking what am I doing here.
Yeah that was a fantastic movie, saw it a long long long long long time ago.

The play wears better than the movie because elf all the necessary close ups.
Did Borgy get the girl?
Borgnine made it past 95, and was apparently in good health until the end. Good run.
Yeah, Ethel Merman...but thankfully, not for long ;-)
I remember watching the TV original on the pathetic little old black and white TV we had.
We thought it was quite miraculous.
.
Of “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” fame?
I had to look to see if she was in it. She was. I remember when Borgnine married her, and wondered if he needed his head examined. It only lasted about a month.
That is true. It is a wonderful film.
Worked in a movie with Rod. He was a nice guy and we talked for hours about alcoholism. He told me his life story.
I dunno Marty - whadda you wanna do tonight?
No, the other Ethel Merman. /s
