The Montana should be Nebraska
The Morel Hunt was an annual statewide event when I lived in Michigan. Invariably 2 or 3 people would die each year from eating toadstools.
I never participated as I’m not that confident in my toadstool spotting abilities.
make some mushroom sauce out of them and then top a nice sirloin steak with it.
Clean the mushrooms to get the dirt off
Quarter the mushrooms vertically
50% olive oil (4 TBS)
50% butter (4 TBS)
Heat until oil it steams in cast iron (preferably)
Fry hot
Fresh Oregano de-stemmed, about 1/4 cup loose, add after a couple of minutes of frying the shrooms (optional)
Fry until at least some carmelization of the shrooms begins (moderate browning)
Add Salt to taste at the end only (it forces liquid out of the mushrooms)
Serve over really good bread
Morel risotto.
Lucky dog. My favorite way is the simplest. Saute in 1/2 butter 1/2 olive oil, not too much and just salt & pepper. Great with a steak or some rice. Or both. Enjoy! If you haven’t cooked them before they will cook down to practically nothing, so if you are getting a pound that would be about 2 meals worth for 2 people or 1 very hungry one.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Risotto. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Where did you get them?
Can you send exact address where they were found?
Ping.
Here’s a few of my favorite sites. Cook well. Notice the warning on toxicity from the Wikipedia site: small amounts of Hydrazine toxins. Do not eat raw or drink with alcohol, you might go into space, lol.

My son found a bunch of them last year. I cannot remember how he cooked them. But, he was a happy young man! lol I imagine he will gather more this year too.
I was target shooting on my mom’s husbands’ land in northern Michigan. Just as I was squeezing the trigger, three trespassers hunting morels walked right into my line of fire.
Apparently a ,357 Magnum is too quiet.
They claimed they were lost. I said “road’s way. Take it”
I was checking out my compost pile and noticed a Shaggy Parasol growing in there. This is odd because that particular ‘shroom usually shows up in mid autumn.
I’m going to leave it be, perhaps I’ll be rewarded this fall with a new crop in a new spot!
The only mushroom I like better than the shaggy parasol is the Prince Agaricus. Utterly amazing flavor and texture. It makes portabellos seem like canned button mushies.
SHaggy manes are pretty good too.
