Why Nothing, Especially Chicken, Tastes Like It Used To

SNIP

In the town of McPherson, Kansas, there is a butcher shop called Krehbiels Meats, where, not long ago, an elderly woman bought a chicken that moved her to tears. The chicken had longer legs, a smaller breast and yellower skin than regular chickens, and on the back appeared two words the woman, who was in her 70s, would not have seen in a very long time: “barred rock.”

She had every reason not to be excited. During the course of her 48 years of marriage, chicken had only ever brought disappointment. The problem was chicken and dumplings. It was one of her husband’s favorite dishes, but every time she made it his verdict was always the same: “Not as good as my mother’s.”

I have a co-worker who bottles her own syrup. I bought some from her last month and tried it. I had just run out of Aunt Jemima. The difference was like night and day. The local syrup was very light, lighter in color and the taste reminded me of syrup I had as a child. I will now buy only the local syrups.

So, where can you get a good old fashioned ‘chicken’ because chicken soup no longer has a good flavor, either.

Farmer's Market.

Be prepared to pay though the nose though and they will be frozen not fresh.

I started doing that about a half a dozen years ago, and it’s great! I have thyme, rosemary, chives, oregano, and sage right now, didn’t have to replant. And am about to plant some Italian parsley and basil, as well as a few varieties of peppers.

cook another 8-24 hours."

That's a LOT of cooking!

I’ve been growing herbs since I’ve had a place to plant them-it is one of the skills learned at home-as soon as I have a place with more ground appropriate for planting, I’ll expand both the herb and veggie garden and put up a greenhouse to extend production and be able to grow some medicinal ones that do not grow here naturally.

A bunch of fresh herbs is almost as good a barter item here as homemade wholegrain bread-I use both to trade for eggs, honey, etc

You can buy chicken that tastes fantastic. You just can’t buy it for $.99 per pound.

MSG is kelp extract?

I don’t cook, but from what I’ve read here on FR, even on this thread, I thought it was extracted from old car batteries before being injected in vast quantities into our foods.

I think that’s great, and more should do what you are doing.

Unfortunately, drbuzzard has it right in post #4, most people would not be able to afford chicken if they were all raised that way.

There are a lot of things I miss about the old days, but food costs, which have declined 40% during the last 30 years isn’t one of them.

Actually, as you age your sense of smell gets ruined. And that deadens the taste of most things.

Thats one of the reasons the eldery in nursing homes stop eating. Even the well cooked food just does not taste good.

The milk in the box is UHT.

You can get UHT milk in stores in the US under the brand name Parmalat.

And if you can find the ingredients the sizes have all been reduced and if you don’t put enough in the outcome could be affected.

An old recipe calls for a jar of peanut butter? Better get 2 jars. Calls for 2 cans of tuna you need to get 3 cans now.

We have a cooked eggnog recipe that we have to add extra eggs because the large eggs of today was medium just a few years ago.

You can also find real Coca-Cola close to Jewish holidays, usually a yellow bottle top.

Raising your own chickens isn’t rocket science. Keeping the foxes and fishers out is, but if you want tasty chicken - they are ridiculously easy, and if you keep the population to about twenty, and rotate the pens - they are not too smelly.
