You are right. Old times are not forgotten. 150 years is really not that long. My mother’s great uncle who she knew as a child fought in the Civil War. We have a picture of her standing next to him.
There is at least one Civil War widow still drawing a pension and a couple of children of Civil War veterans. I believe there is one child of a veteran who said his father told him he either met Lincoln or was at the Gettysburg address.

Honestly I have no idea. My Mom is woefully ignorant about it.
My Dads people rode with McNeil’s raiders and one of them was there when they captured General Crook. We have a Whitney Dragoon that has been passed down in the family since the war as the sidearm which was taken off General Crook. I am the current keeper of the gun. We have no proof and I’m not sure if it can be proven.
I'm second generation American. Grandparents born in Ireland. In my grade school days, I always wondered why the Union side was held in high esteem.

We, the undersigned Prisoners of War, belonging to the Army of Northern Virginia, having been this day surrendered by General Robert E. Lee, C.S.A., Commanding said Army to Lieut. Genl. U. S. Grant, Commanding Armies of United States, do hereby give our solemn parole of honor that we will not hereafter serve in the armies of the Confederate States or in any military capacity whatever, against the United States of America or under aid to the enemies of the latter, until properly exchanged in such manner as shall be mutually approved by the respective authorities.
