Two years ago, long-time Phillies catcher Darren Daulton was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer the American Brain Tumor Association characterizes as being "highly malignant." He had successful surgery to remove a pair of brain tumors in July 2013.
Daulton, now 53, has undergone extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatment in the 19 months since the surgery. On Thursday he passed along some good news:

The Phillies were a pioneer of the steroid era back in the early 90’s. Remember when Len Dykstra went from wiry little guy to Charles Atlas in one off season. Now that these players are hitting their late 40’s and 50’s, makes one wonder if the effect of steroid abuse is raising its ugly head. What horrors are we going to read about in the 2020’s. But on the other hand, since the early pioneers were using stuff meant for veterinary use, maybe not.

I wonder about that also. The use of HgH, testosterone and all the blocking and masking agents in order to maintain muscle growth and stamina are all untested in long term studies at the doses these guys were using.

We’re certainly going to learn about the subject with the NFL studying brains, bit poor John Vukovich was sadly deceived if he ever thought he was taking PEDS. From his Wikipedia bio:”He is also known for recording the lowest career major league batting average (.161) of any non-pitcher with 500 ABs or more.”

I believe Vukovich was from the preceding generation of players. He was in the majors at the time I was playing college baseball. In my time in college, early 80’s, PEDS was something associated with football not baseball. We still were told not to be muscle bound. I first encountered PEDS when I was playing semi pro ball in the late 80’s. I had a few teammates who were using them, and believe me, they work. At the time I was beyond my sell date, but the guys using were younger and still were the ripe age for pro ball. Back then it wasn't Biogenisis and Balco, it was stuff they bought in the mens room at the local gym.

IIRC, NFL Football star, Lyle Alzado passed away from brain cancer that was said to be tied to his use of steroids.
