Pope Francis says it's OK to spank your children to discipline them - as long as their dignity is maintained.
Francis outlined the traits of a good father: one who forgives but is able to "correct with firmness" while not discouraging the child.
"One time, I heard a father in a meeting with married couples say 'I sometimes have to smack my children a bit, but never in the face so as to not humiliate them,'" Francis said.
The Catholic Church's position on corporal punishment came under sharp criticism last year during a grilling by members of a U.N. human rights committee monitoring implementation of the U.N. treaty on the rights of the child.
In its final report, the committee members reminded the Holy See that the treaty explicitly requires signatories to take all measures, including legislative and educational, to protect children from all forms of physical or mental violence - including while in the care of parents.
It recommended that the Holy See amend its own laws to specifically prohibit corporal punishment of children, including within the family, and to create ways to enforce that ban in Catholic schools and institutions around the globe.
The recommendations were prompted by reports to the committee of widespread physical abuse and use of corporal punishment in Catholic-run schools and institutions, particularly in Ireland, that committee members said had reached "endemic levels."

I think I came out better for it.
FWIW, the pope seems to be spreading Latin American culture worldwide.
Pope watch place mark
It’s not making into the Middle East, where he might actually try to do something worthwhile. But that would take some straight talking and action.
Its hard to maintain your dignity when you are bent over grasping your ankles. I should know...I am an American taxpayer.
I had a point here but forgot what it was.
Is there anything this Pope won’t comment on? He’s in the news every other day with his opinion on something.
A focus on the slaughter of Christians in the MiddleEast, Africa, and now it's getting into Europe might actually accomplish some good.
I got swatted on more than one occasion when I was a kid and I’m here to tell His Holiness that dignity never eve entered into the picture.
Spanking is intended in part to deal a blow to a child’s dignity. Pride is the motivator for sin, and it needs reducing, in kids or adults.
“Is there anything this Pope wont comment on? Hes in the news every other day”
It’s a nice respite from listening to that Asshat and master race baiter Al “Tax Dodge” Sharton.
Well, great day in the mornin’! Frank said something with which I agree.
Yeah, Latin culture would be a step up from Islamic areas (where the pope is sure not to reach) and other areas in Africa. But for the rest of the world, not so much.
Proverbs 23.13-14:
"Withhold not correction from the child, for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell [Sheol]."
There’s also lots of instruction in the Old Testament that modern Christians don’t take as literal, current-day instruction.
Spanking teaches that good behavior is the price of dignity.
Pay your dues or pay the penalty.
It also helps kids learn to think long-term.
I've always thought the very point of spanking was the temporary loss of dignity due to having misbehaved. The physical pain should (IMO) be minimized, but the awareness of having screwed up should be maximized. The indignity lasts longer and has a better effect than the temporary physical discomfort.
All due respect to His Holiness, but I think he's wrong on this one. I agree it's okay to spank, but the child should understand they caused their own loss of dignity.
Incidentally, I never actually had to spank my daughter. The mere threat (of loss of dignity) was apparently sufficient to keep her in line. But I count myself as fortunate, as she's a very well mannered young woman now, and was very well behaved as a child.
I had s Nun that would Whack your knuckles so fast you couldn’t believe it.
And it would leave a mark
She would also make you stand in the garbage can for the whole period.
I don’t think “dignity” was part of the deal
Double down on that! USMC Boot Camp: Break their will, but not their spirit!
