Apples newest operating system, iOS 8, is installed on 72 percent of iOS devices almost five months after it first launched in September of 2014, according to new numbers Apple shared on its App Store support page for developers.
Installation numbers are up 9 percent since mid-December and have jumped 3 percent since January 20, following the launch of iOS 8.1.3 at the end of the month. As iOS 8 adoption grows, the number of users running iOS 7 has dropped to 25 percent. 3 percent of users continue to use an earlier operating system.
iOS 8 adoption has been somewhat slower than iOS 7 adoption, as iOS 7 was running on 80 percent of devices in January of 2014, compared to iOS 8s 69 percent adoption rate at that same time. Possible explanations for the slower adoption rate include the large amount of storage space required to update to iOS 8 and the major bugs the operating system has experienced. Excitement over iOS 7s complete visual redesign may have also driven a larger number of upgrades.
Apple has resolved many of the initial bugs that were found in iOS 8 with several operating system updates, including iOS 8.1, iOS 8.1.1, iOS 8.1.2, and iOS 8.1.3, which has led to an uptick in adoption, and the company has also made an effort to inform customers that its possible to install iOS 8 via iTunes to alleviate storage space issues.
Though adoption of iOS 8 has been slower than iOS 7 adoption rates, Apple is still way ahead of Android. The latest version of Android (5.0, aka Lollipop), released in November, is currently only installed on 1.6 percent of Android devices. The vast majority of Android users are still running KitKat, which was released in October 2013, or even Jelly Bean, which first debuted in June 2012.
Android updates often take a long time to propagate to customers because of the large number of different Android-based devices on the market. Android updates must go through carriers and cell phone manufacturers, who like to build their own apps and interfaces into the operating system.
Apple = Borg
Android = assimilated
Here is some pie http://www.spicytec.com/2010/09/mac-vs-pc-consumer-guide.html
Linux is the easiest to install and repair these days
Linux Mint http://www.linuxmint.com/ is easy to get around in plus you can burn it to a cd and boot to it if your Windows stop working and try repairing it or getting your files off the drive.
Mint or even Ubuntu would work fine. I spent a day trying out a half dozen or more versions of Linux, it was kind of fun. Now if someone’s Windows are corrupted, that ain’t fun or easy to fix.
Before cracking any iPad open start by restoring the OS from scratch and upgrading all the way to iOS 8.1.3 and see if that solves the problem. It may be a defective iPad. You may need to make an appointment with the nearest Apple Store Genius Bar and have them run a diagnostic on it.
Since the antenna actually works, it sounds as if there is something else at work here.
Is this thread about computers or mobile devices. Let's look at the headline of the thread: iOS 8 Adoption Rate Hits 72% As Android Lollipop Distribution Reaches 1.6%
I see NOTHING in that topic relating to the irrelevancy you are trying to introduce to the discussion. Non sequitur.
And your FOUR YEAR OLD article is dispositive of WHAT? Not a damn thing.
Means Apple still has the same slice today as it did 4 years ago.
You are wrong.
I can deal, but you guys seem to take apple’s success personally, like you’re offended and must defend your honor or some such. I care not about whose platform is better, whose goose is gored, etc.
I’m here to learn. Incessant bashing of apple, OS X, Swordmaker, etc. do not educate anyone, or enlighten anyone. Yes I understand dissent, etc on FR. But seriously, I give not one whit how Android works when I’m trying to read a Mac thread. And anti-mac-ies crapping on EVERY SINGLE THREAD, is really getting old. Why don’t you start your own Android threads and crap on apple over there? You’d be happier, I’d be happier, sword maker would be happier, and I’d be over there reading also. I use that platform as well.
“I can deal, but you guys seem to take apples success personally, like youre offended and must defend your honor or some such. I care not about whose platform is better, whose goose is gored, etc.”
The truth is that I dont care. If these guys want to use Apple stuff, then they are perfectly free to do so. If they want to discuss technology, then let’s talk about it!
The problem is that Apple people in particular internet-wide have a very difficult time talking about technology without it being in the context of (we use this because we are good, and everything else is awful and unusable). You can go to any tech blog, and from the lowly users in the comment sections to the snobby bloggers, if they are an Apple fan, you cant get a sentence out of them regarding anything not Apple without them taking snide swipes, displaying total ignorance, or displaying that obnoxious haughty attitude which Apple users simply cannot help themselves in doing. It is annoying to people all of the net. It certainly isnt some “Apple hate” thing as they like to think.
If I started tech threads about Microsoft or Google/Android, there would be no shortage of Apple people there to tell us how awful those are. How do I know this? Go look up a previous threads regarding other platforms. They show up regardless.
I’m considering doing some though so that people that want to discuss tech outside of the nutty Apple slant Swordmakers brings can. I’m sure as heck would not take the flame-baiting/braggadocio approach that Swordmaker likes to as some sort of bizarre FR Apple PR agent.
“I give not one whit how Android works when Im trying to read a Mac thread.”
Well this thread failed at being a “mac thread” when he brings in Android as a foil to engage in his iOS praise-a-thon.
Ah, so you are personally offended by apple users attitudes. Got it.
Apples Mac Stomps PC Industry with 18.9% Growth and 7.1% Global ShareBryan Chaffin Bryan Chaffin
Jan 13th, 2015 7:53 PM EST | NewsApple has once again stomped on the PC industry, posting 18.9 percent year over year growth in the December quarter of 2014, according to research firm IDC. With 5.75 million Macs sold during the quarter, Apple retained its #5 global ranking with 7.1 percent market share.
Source: Mac Observer
In the interests of accuracy, Apple's actual figures for the 4th Calendar quarter Mac sales were not as rosy as IDC guesstimated in the early part of January. Apple reported only 5,519,000 Macs sold, for a ~14% Year-over-Year increase, not the 18.9% that IDC guesstimated. However, the overall negative growth in PCs over all was worse, so the percentage of market share is probably around 7%. In the US, depending on which figures you accept, Macs are either 12.7% to 15% of the market. For several other companies who do these reports, such as Canalys, who unlike IDC counts tablets for all makers in their computer figures, while IDC and Gartner count only Microsoft tablets in their PC figures, Apple is the number one producer at over 24% market share and Samsung is included in their charts.
No, VanDeKoik, it is extremely obvious you DO CARE, otherwise you would not be littering these threads with your bile, vile insults, and starting the nastiness. YOU come in and start the attacks. YOU claim these things happen in Windows and Android threads, but I challenge you to demonstrate anything EVEN CLOSE to what you Apple haters do in those threads. I'm confident you can't do that. . . I know because no one has ever risen to that challenge no matter how many times I've made it.
I am educated as an Economist and I know how to do a study and analyze data. . . and I did exactly that on that very subject on FreeRepublic.
Several years ago I went back over a couple of hundred tech threads on FreeRepublic, 100 Apple threads and 100 Windows oriented threads, and analyzed the commentary on Apple v. Windows threads, looking for exactly what you claim because another frothing at the mouth anti-Apple troll claimed his postings on Apple threads were justified by what Apple users were doing on Windows threads.I posted the results on FR.
The number of vile, insulting, and downright nasty comments in Apple threads from Anti-Apple Trolls far outnumbered anything similar in Windows threads from anti-Windows Trolls about 20 to 1. . . and the level of invective and sheer nastiness was far, far worse in the Apple threads. I provided not just examples of each, but every comment that was at all negative from both.
Those things literally NEVER happened in FR Windows threads from Apple users to Windows users. You Apple-haters are vile when you "vent" your disagreement. Apple users are seldom vile.
I challenge YOU, VanDeKoik, to show these vile Apple users in Windows and Android threads where they are insulting the users of those platforms in the same way that you trolls insult Apple users in Apple threads. Go on, find such vile insults, attacks, and calumny in a Windows or Android thread. DEMONSTRATE your assertion.
I GOT ATTACKED FOR POSTING THE ANALYSIS, with the attackers claiming I was lying, that I had not done the study, had made up the replies I had posted (even though they were linked to the originals in their threads), had cherry picked the Apple threads ignoring a lot that had no comments from Windows users, and ignored the "really nasty" Apple user's comments in the Windows threads, without offering any evidence of fraud on my part, or even providing any counter evidence. Of course these attackers used the same invective they used in the Apple threads. The anti-Apple haters, like all liars and bullies, cannot stand the light of truth. The irony was delicious.
Why? Because they really want Windows users to find what they have found. . . the solution to the problems they are complaining about . . . and the "Get a Mac" comment is not snide, it is heart felt advice meant to literally SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS ONCE AND FOR ALL. You just don't get that we do know what we are talking about. You literally cannot believe it.
You Windows users are the majority being discriminatory to a minority. . . and being rude and extremely nasty in the way you go about it.
Well you can keep on with the poor me victim complex, like you are some Democrat grievance minority group, and I fully do not expect you, like those people, to ever mentally get how loony you come off with your utterly obsessive need to convince everyone of the “superiority” of the products you fork money over to Apple for. People that devoted to a corporate brand, short of an employee under their pay, rarely will.
I suggest you try things from other platforms, and maybe broaden your horizons. Only then will you break free from the unhealthy relationship you have with a corporate brand.
What part of "I own a cross platform computer and business consulting firm for almost 40 years"which you personally have been told dozens of times on this forumsimply eludes your feeble grasp, you idiot? I use and work with those other platforms on a daily basis. . .many times CLEANING up the messes they are prone to. I know a hell of a lot more about them than you do. YOU are the ignorant one spewing your insulting bile on these threads.
It is YOU that shows an unhealthy obsession that forces you to comment negatively on these threads, shoving your ignorant opinions and insults down our throats.
I’ve responded to VanDeKoik’s nastiness again. . . he is one sick puppy.
