Apple’s Mac Stomps PC Industry with 18.9% Growth and 7.1% Global Share

Apple has once again stomped on the PC industry, posting 18.9 percent year over year growth in the December quarter of 2014, according to research firm IDC. With 5.75 million Macs sold during the quarter, Apple retained its #5 global ranking with 7.1 percent market share.

In the interests of accuracy, Apple's actual figures for the 4th Calendar quarter Mac sales were not as rosy as IDC guesstimated in the early part of January. Apple reported only 5,519,000 Macs sold, for a ~14% Year-over-Year increase, not the 18.9% that IDC guesstimated. However, the overall negative growth in PCs over all was worse, so the percentage of market share is probably around 7%. In the US, depending on which figures you accept, Macs are either 12.7% to 15% of the market. For several other companies who do these reports, such as Canalys, who unlike IDC counts tablets for all makers in their computer figures, while IDC and Gartner count only Microsoft tablets in their PC figures, Apple is the number one producer at over 24% market share and Samsung is included in their charts.
