Electric Cars Worse For Health, Environment, Than Gas-Powered, Study Claims

Think electric cars are the only form of transportation that can save the world from the dangers of the gas-powered engine? A new study warns that they could actually have the opposite effect.

Gannett’s Cincinnati website cites the findings of a study to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences next week.

In it, co-author and University of Minnesota engineering professor Julian Marshall explains the findings.

“It’s kind of hard to beat gasoline [for the environment]… A lot of the technologies that we think of as being clean … are not better than gasoline.”

Electric cars would fall into this grouping if the source of combustion involves coal. These types of vehicles actually make the “air dirtier, worsening global warming,” the news site states.

Furthermore, they lead to more critical health hazards.

Seth Borenstein of the Associated Press combed through the study and notes that if ignition comes from coal, “electric cars produce 3.6 times more soot and smog deaths than gas, because of the pollution made in generating the electricity.”

Well-stated.

Well-stated again.

Unfortunately, the local FR "progressive" golf-cart enthusiasts don't want a discussion.

...let alone on anything on which another has a different opinion...so ironic when 'prog-con' Freepers resort to Alinsky tactics...

>>You can argue, successfully, that it isn’t an entirely free market, but the problem isn’t at the farmers level

I never said it was a problem with the farmers. I know the history of farm subsidies. Like everything the government does, it’s always a “rob Peter to pay Paul” deal. They just make sure that there are more Pauls and Peters at election time. Or that the Peters aren’t really getting robbed.

But, ethanol as fuel is counter-productive even from an environmental point of view (if the Watermelon Environmentalists could look at anything truthfully).

Ethanol destroys engine seals.

I NEVER liked the idea of mixing ethanol with gasoline. Puts more water into the engine and it lowers the energy yielded per unit of volume or mass for the fuel.

And the 10’s of thousands of dead birds.

If the wind power plants had to pay the fines for killing birds like other industries, no amount of government subsidies could keep them in business.

I never said it was a problem with the farmers.

I replied as I did because your 'solution' in 57 to the mountains of surplus was at a farm level.

Farmers, just as you and I, respond to market conditions.

To solve the problem it needs to be at a market level. Suggesting farmers give the feedstuffs to others isn't a viable solution.

Of course. I did begin with “Sell it.” But since the “market” hasn’t worked in American farming for 80 years, your market solution needs to include an end to our tax dollars being spent on farming too.

The consumer won't stand for the higher food prices. Neither will the politicians.

As circumstantial evidence of that I point to the last few years when farmers were no longer under the governments thumb. They couldn’t be compelled by the government to accept payments not to grow crops, for example.

Have consumers been happy with food prices in the last five years?

Choices will again be made, government manipulation and the cheap food. or the government out and pay more at the grocery store?

I’ll predict that politicians will opt for cheap food, as they have done for the last half century.

Thats my point. There is no “market solution”.

Scrap it all, and walk everywhere, to save the planet. If you want to know more, I will address your group for a moderately large “token” fee, plus expenses.

PM me, and I will tell you which aircraft to charter, and what my other requirements are, to address your group at the Island Paradise of my choice.

Naturally, you will also have to fly your attendees there to hear me speak on how to reduce their carbon footprints, and save the world.

I suggest you read the article. Suggesting I go to DU or KOS is a laugh. If you read the actual article you will find that they are all for electric cars produced with wind and solar. This is a blatant attempt to attack coal with a typical leftist environmental slant. They use bogus claims like deaths per amount of pollution as if that is really something that can be tracked definitively.

Disappointing that so many here fall into the leftist trap of attacking EVs based on environmental reasons rather than the real reason they should be attacking them, which is big government waste and horrible economic policy.

Actually, I think you might be better served at DU or KOS, if you want to play the environment game.

I’m pro-coal. I’m also pro nuclear, geo-thermal and hydro-electric.

However, electric cars suck when compared to internal combustion vehicles, particularly diesels.

No amount of government subsidies will change that. In fact, government interference makes electric cars suck even more.
