Electric Cars Worse For Health, Environment, Than Gas-Powered, Study Claims
Inquisitr ^ | December 28, 2014 06:27 GMT | Julian Marshall, University of Minnesota

Think electric cars are the only form of transportation that can save the world from the dangers of the gas-powered engine? A new study warns that they could actually have the opposite effect.

Gannett’s Cincinnati website cites the findings of a study to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences next week.

In it, co-author and University of Minnesota engineering professor Julian Marshall explains the findings.

“It’s kind of hard to beat gasoline [for the environment]… A lot of the technologies that we think of as being clean … are not better than gasoline.”

Electric cars would fall into this grouping if the source of combustion involves coal. These types of vehicles actually make the “air dirtier, worsening global warming,” the news site states.

Furthermore, they lead to more critical health hazards.

Seth Borenstein of the Associated Press combed through the study and notes that if ignition comes from coal, “electric cars produce 3.6 times more soot and smog deaths than gas, because of the pollution made in generating the electricity.”

Yes, I’ve heard good things about he Ford hybrid. I wouldn’t have a Prius if one was given to me.

Ford Fusion Energi.

It doesn’t matter how many years I have to own it to break even. I bought it in part because of the other tech on it, like adaptive cruise, blind spot notification, lane keeping, rear camera, collision detection with pre-brake charging, etc,

There was far more than just the electric part of the vehicle that went into my purchase. In any case that’s my personal choice.

I’m not being argumentative to you, or rather, I’m not trying. I’m just suggesting that you re-evaluate making a value judgment on my use of coal.

No use of coal is “bad”. America has a strong advantage with her coal reserves. With should use that advantage, with reckless abandonment. Or something like that.

I think overall that it is good to realize that all types of cars have pros and cons, and discuss them.

----------------------------------

Unfortunately, the local FR "progressive" golf-cart enthusiasts don't want a discussion. They argue like the global warming climate change cult. If you say anything against their obsession they try to brand you a liberal; yet they promote liberal ideals.

As I've said before, there is a role for such technology and for all manner of electrical generation. Incidentally, hybrids make more sense than straight electric vehicles.

I remember a FR post about a rain storm in Houston, and all the electric cars were shut down.

Not to worry. Obungler will issue an executive order, forbidding the rain from falling. Problem solved. /s

Keep it simple when examining electric cars. A ten gallon gas tank will propel a car 300 miles. It can then be refilled in 5 minutes. That tank and the fuel in it weighs about 90 pounds when full.

When a battery can do what the tank of gas will do it will be competitive with a conventional car. Until then keep pumping gas. Try driving a Tesla from Denver to Las Vegas in one day. Any conventional car sold today will do that easily. A Tesla or Leaf will not.

Now hitch a 21 foot ski boat to a Tesla. Will it even tow it? How far?

The biggest irony of owning an electric hybrid is that we’re paying for it with my wife’s oil royaltIes. . .

Growing corn to feed people: GOOD.

Growing corn to convert to fuel: BAD.

Be the first!

Tell me what should be done with the mountains and mountain of surplus corn?

Best question so far. I would also add cargo space to what you mentioned.
One of the fundamental reasons for a car is carrying weight for long distances.

Let’s put an end to governmental interference and let the marketplace decide!

Oh, I forgot... “progressives” don’t like free market capitalism.

Well, the horse mess gives you fertilizer. They eat and drink quite a bit though.

I would invite you to read my post again. I said that it is BAD to think that you can REPLACE the internal combustion engine with a coal-burning electric. You drive a HYBRID. It runs on an ICE more than it runs on battery power. Your battery holds the energy equivalent of 2/3 of a gallon of gas and your gas tank holds about 15 gallons. Your car’s battery is only supplementing the ICE. It is far from replacing it. Personally, I think hybrids are great. My wife drives a Sonata Hybrid. We use it on trips because it gets more than double the mileage of my Mustang GT.

While we do have lots of coal, we do not have lots of generation capacity.

Sell it. Feed the hungry. Grow something else. Those mountains exist because of government manipulation of the food supply.

Those mountains exist because of government manipulation of the food supply.

True that.

This began around the end of WWII, when politicians started to manipulate food production to ensure an endless supply of cheap food for consumers. That way they wouldn't have to go into an election faced with a populace angry about high food prices.

They kept farmers poor, dependent on government programs, misnamed as 'Farm Programs'.

They actually should have been named for the purpose they were designed for: "Cheap Food For Consumers'.

A lot of things were included, included 'paid for not growing food'. The programs were successful beyond any dreams a politician could have.

Not only was there plenty of food, food prices fell almost 40% in 30 years.

All that fell by the wayside with the advent of the environmentalists. Suddenly farmers were being paid for actual production, not some imaginary government sponsored production level, but for real production.

Consumers have been angry about all of that, now that farmers could sell to an actual market, food prices moved in response to the actual market of their product. That resulted in a reallocation of production and new prices.

You can argue, successfully, that it isn't an entirely free market, but the problem isn't at the farmers level, it's at the environmentalists level. Farmers are responding, as you yourself do, to changes in the price they receive for their product.
