On Friday, we, like many others, published photos of thousands of people standing in line to buy the new iPhone, the iPhone 6.
Most people think of these lines as being filled with crazed fanboys who just can't wait to get their hands on the latest product from Apple. However, filmmaker Casey Neistat (via Re/code) created a six-minute video that shows there is a dark, disturbing side to these lines.
The lines are not filled only with crazed fanboys. Neistat shows that the lines are filled with people waiting for days to buy an iPhone 6, only to flip it as soon as they leave the store. On YouTube, he says "this entire experience was disheartening."
We have the full video below, here's a quick rundown of what you'll see:

I don’t know if it’s just the government monitoring angle, but I too just don’t wish to shackle myself and my life to the whole world of technology/social-media and such. It’s looking more and more to me like a form of self-enslavement, and I do worry about the cultural implications as well. Hence, absolutely zero interest from me in the iPhone frenzy.
That’s what you call American entrepreneurialism at its best.
LOL! I was in Jacksonville the other day and there was a line at the Apple store just to SEE the new models. Fortunately, it wasn’t a long wait, and I went and got to touch it and decide whether I wanted to order the bigger one or the smaller one. (I chose the smaller one because the big one would have been impractical for me.)
I am ordering it through my carrier, however, so I won’t be on of the first but I won’t have to wait on line either. That said, it looked like fun. There was a lot of camaderie and joking going on among the people waiting to actually buy, and it just seemed like it might be fun if you had the time (and interest!).
See a need, fill a need.
Gov't can't figure out how to tax it. ;-)
I was thinking about getting one when we switch from my T-mobile android. When I found out about 75% of the market is Android, I changed my mind.
I used to own a Beta VCR.
The Chinese Triad puts them in line to buy unlocked phones for full price (in cash), so they can smuggle them into China and sell them for $2500 and more. A lot more.
China has required Apple to obtain a license or two sell the iphone 6 in China.
hear, hear!
i want the makers of this video to explain why this is not a good way for anyone to do business... and i also do not get what they meant by "there were a few consistencies..." or did i read that wrong?
in any case, this is no different than hiring someone to babysit...
that's how i feel some mornings when i go to work...
Hear hear.
Put the danged computer down and go fishing.
Don’t like fishing? Fair enough. Put the danged computer down and go do something... anything.
Would that market really make a price difference if they bought and shipped them two days later, without the long line wait? Or simply fill out the Pre-order?
Poor old Microsoft, nobody cares anymore. Kicked to the curb for Samsung in the Apple wars.
That iPhone 6 plus is really going to hurt Samsung in Asia, btw. Their market share is already dropping badly, squeezed on the low end by Chinese phones and on the top by Apple.
Have you also noticed that while people are more “connected” than ever, they are also more lonely and lack meaningful relationships?
Yes the cultural implications from all the social media, etc. won’t be fully known for some time. What I do know is that it’s not going to be pretty.
Microsoft also serves me pretty well. Two machines with W7..and both with Office.I wouldn't walk across the street for an Apple computer, either.
I know. Scratch the surface of the Suddenly Samsung Samurai, find a Microsoft certification.
What - you got something against sleeping in garbage bags?
When you’re on welfare, you can sit in lines all day after you wake up at noon.
W95...W98...XP...W7...Office 97...Office 07...Office 10...several other Microsoft products...no problems worth reporting.Apples are something I buy at the supermarket,not something I plug in.
Others feel differently.
This is their idea of “disturbing” and “unsettling”? A “dark side”?
I was expecting muggings, knock-out games, at least pick-pocketing.
Pathetic. Has the smell of commie pinkoes.
