Walt Disney and Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy debuted with a powerhouse $94 million opening weekend. Thats the third biggest opening of the year, behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95m) and Transformers: Age of Extinction ($100m).
Since opening weekend is of course about marketing, Walt Disney deserves a gold star in that department. From the get-go, their marketing campaign as been a textbook example of how to sell an unknown property to the masses.
Of course, it helps that James Gunn and company delivered a winning final product, and so Disney screened it early and often and let the review embargo drop right before Comic-Con. And now, since the marketing campaign kept quite a few narrative and visual surprises out of the clips and trailers, it may well reap the benefit of audiences discovering their favorite beats in a theater, which is a major driving force for word-of-mouth and repeat viewings.

The poster got me hooked, I have to go to see that coon with the machine gun. We rescued a baby one when I was a kid, lots of fun if you don’t mind loosing a bit of blood once in a while; teeth are like needles.
I hear it’s not really that great of a movie.
Films that must rely solely on their eye-candy effects for viability seldom are.
Saw it last night. It’s not a GREAT movie - It doesn’t change your world view, it doesn’t have a deep emotional or political message and it’s not greater than the sum of its parts. I thought the last act kind of fell flat for the climax which weakened the movie for me overall.
That said... it’s a very fun movie and the actors do a good job making the characters shine which makes the whole thing work.
I was having emotional connections with an anthopomorphized RACCOON!!!
(And if you’re an age-old marvel comics fan (or George Lucas fan) stay for the cookie at the very end of the credits.)
Looks like a good fun movie.
I enjoyed it. James Gunn has a sense of humor slightly askew of Hollywood which is refreshing. He does darkly comedic moments well. The cast works very well together and it’s very cohesive in story and tone. Worth a ticket. Can’t miss on rental or cable.
I enjoyed how the entire soundtrack was 1980s and 1970s songs as well.
You heard wrong. 92% on RT, 8/10 average rating and a A Cinemascore. I saw it Friday and it is a fun, eye pleasing, funny, yet serious movie. One of my favorite comic book movies so far.
I saw it. It has a talking raccoon. With a gun.
Yes, it’s worth it. Just turn off your brain and enjoy,
There are a couple of curse words in it, but the kids hear a lot worst on the playground. No sex scenes.

I always hated Disney movies/TV shows because of their ,Happy Sad Happy Sad Happy Sad give you a headache way they made them
The only character from that cover that appears in the movie is Yondu, and most of his fin is missing...
I saw it.
Good film, and I recommend it. It was fun, and one of the more solid “popcorn movies” I’ve seen in a long time. Definitely worth a matinee.
After Jim STarlin's treatment of Gamora and Drax, not to mention the stark melodrama that was the original Star Lord, this is cartoonville.
I'm sure it's great fun, but a lot less grey matter involved than the original incarnations.
And, IIRC, 'Rocket Racoon' was introduced in the second 'Sword in the Star' story by Bill Mantlo (the 'Wayfinder' series, with Keith Geffen doing the pencils). I still have the original black and white magazine in storage somewhere.
I just checked is on at the six plex movie theater near here.
Four si-fi fantasies. Two kiddie cartoon shows. Nothing for an adult. No dramas. No adventure. No westerns. No war movies.
We truly live in an age of fantasy. 60 years ago these modern fantasy movies would have been given a B budget and played on the bottom of at double feature drive-in along with HERCULES AND THE VAMPIRE WOMEN.

why?
$500 to $1000 for VF to NM copies...
There’s a cameo by a Marvel character who was exiled from film long ago.
true to most Marvel Movies they roll an “Easter egg” after the credits, that preview and connect the movie into other movies and characters in the marvel movies and things that may come.
yep..and old comic geek here, and huge fan of the earlier incantation of the 70’s Star Lord
