When mice with the human equivalent of Type 2 diabetes were injected with the protein FGF1, their blood sugar levels returned to normal over two days. Just one injection of the protein both regulated these levels and even helped reverse insulin insensitivity – the underlying cause of diabetes.
Published in the journal Nature, the research on FGF1 could revolutionize diabetes treatment.
In addition to being effective against diabetes, the protein has several advantages over current diabetes drugs. It does not result in dangerous side effects seen with other diabetes drugs, such as heart problems, weight gain, or hypoglycemia. Additionally, FGF1 not only increased insulin levels but also helped the mice regain their own ability to regulate insulin.

You incorrectly assume each Pharma has control over their product availability. The FDA is in control, and the FDA has a long record of burying good products. The really big Pharma control the FDA.
Unfortunately, scientists have cures for many problems in mice. In 2008, there was a Canadian study which found the following:
Diabetic mice became healthy virtually overnight after researchers injected a substance to counteract the effect of malfunctioning pain neurons in the pancreas. "I couldn't believe it," said Dr. Michael Salter, a pain expert at the Hospital for Sick Children and one of the scientists. "Mice with diabetes suddenly didn't have diabetes any more."
They injected the neuropeptide "substance P" in the pancreases of diabetic mice, a demanding task given the tiny size of the rodent organs. The results were dramatic. The islet inflammation cleared up and the diabetes was gone. Some have remained in that state for as long as four months, with just one injection.
I agree, the FDA moves too slowly. But on the other hand, they have cured about every disease known to man in mice and rat models. Those same treatments frequently are ineffective when tried on humans.
Won’t be of much use as high fructose corn syrup is in nearly everything.

Ain’t it the truth... Possible cures for cancer, Alzheimers, diabetes etc. Don’t want to rush them to market. Might prove harmful to terminally ill patients. /s

If anyone develops a one-shot cure for Type-II Diabetes, they can retire to Monaco and divide their time between the mansion and the yacht.
And they’ll be driven between the two in a chauffeured Rolls Royce.

Actually, I was being a shade too modest in my terms.
Anyone these days who develops a one-shot cure for Type-II Diabetes could probably buy Geneva, Switzerland.
And throw in Zurich for chump change.
While this sounds promising as a treatment, it is still a long way from a cure. The basic problem is that the islets of Langerhans are shutting or have shut down. While this treatment might mitigate one of their processes, it likely does not significantly impact the others.

Not too long ago, it was discovered that some diabetics still had some functioning islets, but that they were blocked by fat deposits. So a one or two month hospitalization starvation regimen was tried with some success to break the logjam, as it were.
But this didn’t affect those islets that had already shut down. Likewise, the body has insulin receptors that may be a completely different problem if they malfunction.
I've yet to hear a severe heart attack victim say "wait, how much is this going to cost me?".....LOL!

I think it will be several years before there is anything available for people to take, as opposed to mouse experiments, but this is certainly promising news.
