Daniel Chase, co-designer of the device, says it can remove 45,000 metric tons of garbage each day.
“Instead of chasing one or two pieces of trash at a time, we just stand at the source of it and catch it all at once,” he said.
Chase says the garbage comes from people who throw litter like plastic bottles or Styrofoam plates on the ground, instead of putting it into bins.
The water wheel uses renewable energy -- mostly river current, but when needed, also energy from solar panels.
‘It is run on water, so it’s either river current, pushing from underneath or we are pumping water onto it which then fills buckets to carry the wheel around,” Chase said.
The rotation of the water wheel also provides other benefits by putting oxygen back into the river, and thus improving the water quality.

They need a big one for oil spills.
But the EPA will not allow it to be used in oil spills because it wasn't their doings, or public money spent. As a matter of fact the thing makes a profit by collecting the oil for refining.
probbly doesn’t kill enough stuff cleaning the water. put a wind turbine and a solar farm on there to chop and roast some birds and fedgov may let them use it.

Not that heavy. . . I might see it per year, 45,000 metric tons a day is equivalent of the displacement of a US Navy Nuclear Aircraft Carrier every two days. . . and they'd have to haul that pile of rubbish away each and every day.
How many dump truck loads a day? Let's see. Dump trucks usually handle 6 cubic meters (which is convenient for our calculation). . . Which would weigh 1000 kilograms per cubic meter if it were pure water. But since this trash is made of miscellaneous water-soaked debris that floats on water, let's estimate it at a lighter 750 Kgms per cubic meter. Therefore, each dump truck could carry (6 x 750 Kilograms = ) 4.5 metric tons of the 45,000 tons scooped up by this water wheel waste system each day. Ergo, It would take 1,000 dump truck round trips to the land fill per day to handle the detritus collected by this device.
Oh, and think about this. There are 86,400 second in 24 hours. 86,400 second divided by 45,000 metric tons equals one metric ton every 1.92 seconds. Is this flotsam crowding and jostling for position in a desperate dash to be picked up? A truck has to be loaded and move out approximately every 9 seconds. . . 24/7. Powered by water and solar?

I found an article from May 2014 says the device would remove 50,000 pounds per day. That's 22,700 kilograms, 22.7 metric tons. Almost 2,000 times less capacity than the posted news report claimed.
Ahem. For trash data. . . It didn't pass the smell test.
How deep can that work ? Looks like if they added a bailer to that and dumped them on a small barge would work.
Or, shall I put it this way. GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT!
