Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 was "highly likely" on autopilot when it ran out of fuel and crashed into the Indian Ocean, Australian researchers have said.
A new search area for the missing Boeing 777 plane has been announced by the Australian government ....
Deputy Prime Minister Warren Trust confirmed the search will move further south to an area 1,800km (1,100 miles) off the western coast of Australia....
An expert group has reviewed the existing information on MH370, revealing that is it probable that the plane was on autopilot when it ended its flight.
Truss said it was "highly, highly likely that the aircraft was on autopilot" when it went down.
"Otherwise it could not have followed the orderly path that has been identified through the satellite sightings," he told reporters.
Martin Dolan, commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which is leading the search, said the plane was believed to have been deliberately set to autopilot "somewhere off the western tip of Sumatra" - although the exact point at which it was set is unknown.
The assessment was based on the understanding that the plane flew on a straight path.
"Certainly for its path across the Indian Ocean we are confident that the aircraft was operating on autopilot until it went out of fuel," he said.
A 64-page report revealed at a press conference on Thursday revealed the search would now be covering up to 60,000 square kilometres along narrow arc in the Indian Ocean, which has been identified as the most likely resting place of MH370.
"The new priority area is still focused on the seventh arc, where the aircraft last communicated with satellite.
"We are now shifting our attention to an area further south along the arc based on these calculations."

That too. Seems he ran simulations on his home computer. Speaking of which, AOPA has this nifty simulator - problem is it costs like $2500 .... and that’s without the rudder pedals - extra $250(....
You do if you are CS muslim and don't want to be awake or conscious when the end comes and really want to screw up the investigation of what really happened.................
<>autopilot<>
Here are the Inmarsat arcs:

The place where it allegedly went on autopilot is ~S4E93 at 4:11 and dropped in the ocean ~S32E97 at 8:11 — that’s 1940 miles over 4 hours.
I would love to see a straight line from point to point through those arcs that allows for a fixed speed hour by hour over those 4 hours.
If I’m reading that chart correctly, the autopilot would have had to fly the first hour at 307 mph and the last hour at 700mph — and that not only bad autopiloting, but it’s also impossible.
Good point. But what about the FO? Was he in on it? Guess so.
Razor to the throat...................

Could be but the plot must be a projection from points on a sphere to a flat surface so that would need to be taken into consideration. Plus I don’t understand how whoever made this plot drew the straight line. As you noted, they should have used constant velocity to choose the points and then see if that curve maps to straight line.
Despite the plot, they must have done that to draw the conclusion they did. Don’t you think?
I think by now its part of 100k pepsi cans in china.....
King Kong’s home, Skull Island, is 40 miles west of Sumatra. Hmmmm.
It may never be found, and even if it is may never be recovered..........................
That straight line is the yellow flight path here drawn by the NTSB:

It’s not that far for the sphere to significantly come into play. But you can recheck the numbers here:

It’s either autopilot or Inmarsat arcs — it can’t be both.
“Truss said it was “highly, highly likely “
Truss is a certified moron. Is “highly, highly likely” anything like “super duper sure, almost”?

4 hours. 500 miles per hour. 2000 miles. 2000/24000 = 1/12
1/12 * 360 = 30 degrees. I don’t think a 30 degree arc on a globe would look as straight as the plot.
But maybe the are using some transformation that plots arcs as straight lines. If that is possible.
You are right. Something doesn’t look right.
If he(the pilot) was practicing short field landings and radar evasion on his simulator for months, like was reported yesterday, then why would he kill himself?

Good question that the officials will evade.
He should have been practicing putting the plane on autopilot or running out of fuel or crashes.
I saw it at an airport in Nebraska.
Too late, activating the autopilot then has no effect.
I looked at this again last night and the only way the Inmarsat arcs work with the autopilot is if the plane was put on autopilot deadheading to New Amsterdam Island shortly after turning south for about 4.5 hours —
BUT then in order to hit that final arc it would have had to come off autopilot and that heading with about an hour of fuel left. It’s at that point that it would have to turn to the east toward Perth to hit that final Inmarsat arc and the new search area.
Whether he then put it back on autopilot after making those course corrections with an hour left, who knows, but that’s what they must be calling “being on autopilot”.
Very interesting. But are you doing anything to correct for the spherical to flat surface projection. Or, alternatively, have you determined that the mapping of straight lines works on the projection you are using.
As an example of this issue just look at the projection of any non-equatorial satellite on a flat map. No straight lines to be found.
