LeBron James To Opt Out Of Miami Heat Contract, Become Free Agent
Business Insider ^ | 06/24/2014 | Tony Manfred

LeBron James will exercise the early termination option in his contract with the Miami Heat, becoming an unrestricted free agent, his agent told ESPN's Chris Broussard. It doesn't necessarily mean that he's leaving Miami.

By opting out, he can sign a new five-year maximum contract with the Heat. If he left Miami, he could only get a four-year deal with a slightly lower annual salary. The difference between staying and leaving is $33 million.

If it’s the Lakers the league will likely put the kibosh on it.

I'm just a casual NBA fan, so I'm a little uneducated about this. Why would the league stop him going to the Lakers?

It would be free agency, not a trade. The league has no say in that. Also remember CP3 was being traded from a team that was “owned” by the league at the time, gave them even more veto power than they usually have on trades.

The same reason why the NBA nixed the deal sending CP3 to the Lakers..they didnt want the Lakers to become a championship team again..you would have had Kobe+Chris Paul+Dwight Howard(Eventually that would have happened) and the NBA didnt want it to happen..David Stern is a Socialist, he had once said that he doesn’t think its right for one NBA team to keep on winning, that every team deserves a “Right” to win a title..he doesn’t want Kobe to get his six ring

Yeah but the trade the Lakers were offering was a good deal, Stern just didn’t want it to happen.also Dan Gilbert from Cleveland was objecting to the trade too, acted like a big baby about it

I really don't see LBJ leaving Miami

Isn't Sierra pregnant again? If she likes Miami, that would be new.

That’s not why they nixed the trade. It was bad timing, the league had just gone through all kinds of rules tweaks trying to get a system in place that would stop making it so the big teams get all the big players. Then before the ink was even dry a deal comes up that will once again send a big players from a small team to a big team, thus completely invalidating everything Stern said he was trying to accomplish. Stern couldn’t have the league run team show his pet project had failed, so he invalidated it (the pathetic part is the guys negotiating the trade were in the same building as Stern, with him being against it it never should have been made public). Stern is gone, Silver hasn’t shown any concern over big teams getting bigger.

It was a good deal, but it went against things Stern said he had accomplished, that could not be allowed to happen, not involving a team that Stern functionally ran. Stern’s gone though, and the league isn’t currently running any of the teams, and nobody seems to have picked up Stern’s parity torch. Of course the Lakers are in self induced cap hell, so they aren’t in the LeBron market anyway.

But Silver has shown that he will beg over backwards for “Political correctness” if he has enough NBA owners crying over a big name star going to a big name city he will make sure it doesn’t happen..its not like LeBron would come to LA anyway, he wants to be the man, and that wouldn’t work with Kobe here..and LeBron is a prick, big Obama lover, Trayvon supporter..I think him coming here would be a bad idea anyway, would much rather have Kevin Love

If I were a big name athlete who could write my own ticket, I’d sign with a club that doesn’t have any winters......

Silver has shown he doesn’t want a player revolt, and he won’t hit the mattresses for an owner everybody hates. But with Sterling gone probably the most hated owner in the league is Gilbert, Silver won’t cave to his whining.

I care, sort of. While I do enjoy watching pro sports, the NBA ranks well down the list below the NFL, MLB and NHL. With age and questionable maturity, you just have to accept these guys for who they really are.

Mercenary gladiators. Nothing more. They are not role models. With few exceptions, they are not “nice guys.” (Even in the 1930s Leo Durocher said “nice guys finish last.”)

But if you accept that they are simply paid to put on an athletic competition where the attraction is in the uncertainty of outcome, then take it for what it is.

Parity my ass; maybe Stern picked up on that idea later in his tenure. But one of his early acts was to make sure Patrick Ewing landed in New York and not to a small market team, like the Pacers.

I do not forget the “bent envelope.”

He had a 30 year run. Near then end he got into parity.

I understand Houston is willing to put serious money on the table for James.

There is actually talk of a Lebron - Carmelo Anthony pairing {Not sure if this will work, one ball hog is enough].

Except for this year’s championship Spurs, who have now won 5 championships in 16 seasons and are made up of nice guys. The Onion has been running articles for years poking fun at Tim Duncan for being such a nice guy. The team plays unselfish basketball, and blew out Miami in the most lopsided finals win ever.

Look up “The Beautiful Game” on YouTube sometime.

Meanwhile, Tim Duncan, fresh off his fifth title in sixteen years, resigned with the Spurs at his below-market salary. Tim Duncan’s Spurs have the highest 17-year winning percentage in the history of the NBA, averaging 58 wins a year.
