8 stars whose box-office draw is nosediving

With an opening weekend take of $28 million, Tom Cruise’s new sci-fi film “Edge of Tomorrow” — which debuted June 6 — did even worse than his last sci-fi movie, 2013’s “Oblivion.” In the last eight years, Cruise has had only one hit (2011’s “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol”). It looks like he’s nearing the end of his run as a major movie star, though we’ll see how “Mission: Impossible 5” does when it comes out next year.

It may be true today, but back when Hollywood was still part of America, real men played lead for decades. The difference is pretty boys lose their appeal as quickly as the girls they resemble.

John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Clint Eastwood, and Sean Connery made a pretty good living on the other side of fifty.

Russia has always had a very high regard for all things French.

Especially French weapons tech. They are building two Mistral-class amphibious assault ships for the Russian navy now. And I believe the SU-35 and MiG-35 fly with French avionics.

This article is dead wrong, at least as far as Edge of Tomorrow goes. At Rotten Tomatoes, its critic rating is 90% and its viewer rating is 92%. But the zinger is at Box Office Mojo.

Production budget: $178 million

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $56,649,000 23.8%
+ Foreign: $181,000,000 76.2%

= Worldwide: $237,649,000

This shows that right now, the film is in the black to the tune of $56 million, in its 9th day of release in the US. Granted sales are weak in the US, but are more than made up overseas.

And another kicker is that the official release date of the DVD/Blu-Ray is October 21st. That will probably boost its bottom line by a minimum of $100m.

For me, when Cruise is on screen, it is Cruise all the time, only Cruise, Cruise, Cruise, Cruise.

He likes it that way. And when he does have a wingman (Goose) he has to kill him off quick. (Spoiler there for those few who have not seen top gun)

Oh man. I feel so sorry for his kids because you know Sandler talks that baby talk with them. Unfair! Child abuse!

I don’t know if that’s Cruise of the filmmakers. After all if you pay for Tom Cruise, you’re going to want to show off what you bought.

Brother Where Art Thou was great. But he was kinda still the “hot one” even in that! Even though his head was greasier than the jars and tubes in bill Clinton’s Oval Office.

But Up in the Air was total Clooney. While I “enjoyed” watching the film (it was unpleasant and one of us had just been laid off), I felt tricked. There is no way a married mother of young kids could get away for a family wedding weekend and never be texting or calling home. That was a cheap fake out.

Robert Downey Jr is indeed a gem. He can lose himself in his role and he is smart and funny for real.

I see him as a modern day Cary Grant.

So does he.

Not buying the OLD part. Clint Eastwood and Tom Selleck stayed hot and popular regardless of aging. Tis something else.

You have a point. Sometimes I watch old friends episodes and I think, you pick CHANDLER over Tom Selleck??? Come on.

The best acting in the Ocean’s movies was by Andy Garcia.

He was great. I got to be in his trailer once. Really liked and respected him. What is he doing these days?

Unlike so many of the pretty boys in Hollywierd, Andy IS a good actor. And from some interviews I’ve seen, I think he’s probably a very nice person too.

From what I saw of him, he was. My friend worked for him. Very nice and normal.

I would see Ed Wood. I did hear good things about it. One day. And I will look for Lisa Marie dancing. I heard probably here on FR miss Sarah Jessica Horsica Parker described as “she has a face like a foot” and she does. I wish she wouldn’t push herself as “beautiful” and just be happy as a star or actress. She hates it when people criticize her looks, and we wouldn’t so much if she didn’t thrust herself into fashion and beauty situations (I believe she had or advertised a perfume called Beautiful. That is asking for it.). I do really like her husband.
