This article is dead wrong, at least as far as Edge of Tomorrow goes. At Rotten Tomatoes, its critic rating is 90% and its viewer rating is 92%. But the zinger is at Box Office Mojo.
Production budget: $178 million
Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $56,649,000 23.8%
+ Foreign: $181,000,000 76.2%
= Worldwide: $237,649,000
This shows that right now, the film is in the black to the tune of $56 million, in its 9th day of release in the US. Granted sales are weak in the US, but are more than made up overseas.
And another kicker is that the official release date of the DVD/Blu-Ray is October 21st. That will probably boost its bottom line by a minimum of $100m.
The production company averages slightly less than 50% of the box office over the time a film is in release, even less in the foreign market. The rest goes to the theaters and distribution companies.
Rule of thumb for profitability for movies is to have twice the box office in the domestic market than the cost of the production of the film.
Them’s good numbers. I’d love for our movie to have a percentage like that.
“Edge of Tomorrow” is still in the red.
On a budget of $178 million, it has to make $350 million to get in the black.
